What do you think of the Channel Awesome ordeal?
Itās been weird to watch that from afar.
I never was a big fan of That Guy With Glasses. Itās long enough ago that my memory is hazy, but I remember him being very obnoxious in the early days of Youtube. He liked to crank out huge volumes of content and I remember there being a huge upset when Youtube started implementing copyright strikes.
I never really liked that, or the empire built from that. He was loud, picky, and obnoxious, which sort of became the standard for so many to follow in his wake. He took the AVGN āwhat were they THINKING?ā logic and blew it out so hard it wrapped around and became annoying, in an era where AVGN still seemed fresh, cool, and interesting.
Iām aware that he āquitā some years ago, or at least retired his ācharacter,ā but still. He was the face of all that stuff for many many years, and while it would be strong to say that I hated him, I really didnāt care to ingest any of his stuff.
Seeing all of that implode is⦠I donāt want to say itās enjoyable, because I know there were legitimately good people over there. And I donāt want to say itās funny, either, because some of the stories that have come out of that thing are genuinely troubling.
Some of the stories to come out of that are funny, though. Itās impressive how inept the people running that show were. Sometimes it really feels like the people least qualified to be famous are the ones that always somehow end up famous. Like the time one spends being thoughtful and respectful gets wasted by idiots who rush to get there first and are rewarded for their stupidity.
At the very least, I do not mourn any part of Channel Awesomeās death. Iām confident the people who used to have shows under that banner will do better without it.
To tide you over while I'm away, here's another classic episode, this time it's Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
Nostalgia Critic: The Cat in the Hat At 23:20 Spot on Doug, spot on.
