Ever since she had discovered her daughter's links with the Sidera, Diane had been on edge. But as yet, she did not have enough information to confront her about it. From several different sources, she sought out information, but she didn't have enough yet, not by any means. Slowly, though, she was piecing together information. At home, hidden where nobody would find it, she had a notebook with every bit of information she knew in it. It was not yet by any means impressive, but her knowledge could only grow. She would get to the bottom of this, if it was the last thing she did.
Now Tod. In hospital, he posed no threat to her, and Marie should not get wind of it if she was lucky. Of course, there was every chance that Mr Rooney would not respect her wishes to keep her visit a secret, but she was already formulating responses. We deserve to know the truth.
A friendly nurse let he into his room, and she smiled at the boy, a container of home-baked gingerbread and a 'Get Well Soon!' card in her handbag. She got them out, and smiled at him, saying, "Good afternoon, Tod, dear. How do you feel?"
Though he had been attempting to give Tod space, Colton found himself getting more and more wound up throughout the week, worrying about his friend. So on the weekend, he got the bus up to the hospital, desperately hoping that he had remembered the visiting hours correctly. When he arrived, it turned out that he had managed to arrive bang on time, much to his relief, and he was allowed in to see Tod.
"Hey, man, how're you doing?" he asked as he shut the door behind him.
Visiting Hours 3.0
In the last few hours, Colton had smoked half a packet of cigarettes and drunk seven cups of coffee, but when he was told he could see Tod it had only taken ten minutes for him to fall asleep. He wouldn't leave Tod's side until he woke up, he knew that much, and honestly he was still upset with Tod but it didn't matter at all, because it had been his own stupid fault and he cared more about Tod than his pride or even himself. The chair he sat on was hard and unforgiving, and when he woke up he could feel stiffness and aching in his joints and shoulders, and his new tattoos were sore, but he yawned and stretched, then shuffled his chair closer to Tod's bedside. He hadn't seemed to have moved at all, and Colton felt his stomach drop. The smell of the hospital room wasn't helping; it reminded him of last time he was in hospital. Taking Tod's hand, he sighed tiredly. "Hey," he said quietly. "If you wake up, I'll leave you alone and you don't have to talk to me ever again, okay? But you have to be okay. Please." Speaking like this felt foolish, like speaking to a mirror. But he wanted Tod to hear. He let go of his hand, and scratched the back of his head, then spent a moment smoothing the plasters on his hands.

"We were first at the jukebox, and we were punching in the 'What's New Pussycat's, all right? I punched in about seven. And then John Tod says to me, "Hey, hey, hey, wait. Before we drop in another 'What's New Pussycat', let's put in one 'It's Not Unusual'.
"And that is when the afternoon went from good to great."
Christmas Shopping
He had a list written on the back of a receipt, of ideas for presents. As he walked into town, he went over it, wondering if he should have been more specific. Cursing the sleep-deprived him of last night who had written it, he began thinking further on what to get.
• Tod - Something to cheer him up? Booze? • Isabelle - BOOKS?? What books? old books?? • Cassie - flowers :) • Theo - a hug and a bottle of cheap liquor
He decided that Belle's was the easiest, so he went to the nearest book shop and promptly realised that it was not in fact easy at all, and that the number of books in this shop surely outnumbered stars in the sky. She liked classics, he remembered, so went to that section. He hasn't realised how many there were - surely if they were classic there shouldn't be a lot of them, he had thought. But apparently not. Soon enough he had picked out a book called Emma that reminded him of the last one she'd leant him, so she would probably like it if she hadn't already read it.
Next he went to the offie and resisted buying himself something, instead choosing a bottle of whiskey for Theo that he remembered they'd drank together at Christmas a few years ago. Whilst he was there, he got in some drinks and grenadine that would be necessary in the cocktails he was going to try to make for Tod. Maybe he could pull that off as a part of his present. He wasn't sure what else to get him.
It was only on his way to get flowers when he passed a place you could get all sorts of things personalised that he had an idea. He went in and left fifteen minutes later with a mug with TOD written on it in cursive. That would do, he decided. Having bought Cassie's lilies, he hesitated, and then bought another bunch, this time of sunflowers. Though he had not intended to buy Bradley anything, Colton had just seen them and thought of him.
He stopped by the off-licence again, and bought a bottle of wine for Maslowe (because frankly he deserved it) and then set off home, understandably exhausted and upsettingly skint.
