Find: (v.)
"The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." John 1:43 (ESV).
The word here for "found" is the Greek εὑρίσκω (heuriskó): to find, get, obtain, learn, discover, especially after searching. It doesn't mean Jesus wandered up to Philip on the street and physically located him, as in, "I found a sandwich on the sidewalk!" It means he sought Philip out, discovered him and learned about him.
I think sometimes it's easy to see social justice work/evangelism as a numbers game: I'll donate this many care packages, raise this much money, invite this many people to church, etc. But the language used in the Bible reminds us that God is not just collecting people, but seeking out individuals to know and love. Like Jesus, we need to find people, not simply locate them.
I struggle with falling into the trap of a goal-oriented faith, and I'm pretty sure we'd all like a nice neat "Souls Led To Christ" or "People Served In Name Of Christ" tally board, but Jesus doesn't operate like that. It's not about how many people come through the door on Sunday, but why they're there and how we treat them. It's not about how many people we can reach with the message of Christ's love, but about how we love them.
