The subway wasnβt too heavily occupied and it helped that the passengers had scattered themselves throughout the unit. The sound of the train running along the rails was like white noise to Darby, the unceasing lull being background music to her thoughts. Some more work had rolled in for her, the list of clients ran behind her eyelids like computer script. Sheβd dive into her work once she got back to her room but for now mentally organizing things would have to do. Easier said than done though with all the noise but that wasnβt what was peeving Darby at the moment.
No it was that damn little dog just glaring-well maybe it wasnβt glaring but it had a certain bratty way about it Darby thought. Judging maybe? In all actuality the shih tzu was most likely simply looking her way but in her current mood Darby just didnβt care for that shit at all. Why was this distracting her? Maybe the dog can tell thereβs something wrong with her. That sheβs incorrect, tainted with lies and manipulation to get the outcome she desires. Any semblance of candor long gone but that wasnβt entirely true no matter how strongly Darby believed it. Maybe her paranoia was actually making her loose it now. Half ass contemplating the moral judgments of some guyβs theoretically telepathic dog.
Feeling a bit stupid now for her (brief and weird) internal emotional roller coaster Darby sips on her bottle of water sheβd been clutching. Whyβd she always have to act this way, like even the most benign things in the world were somehow out to get her. It was just an innocent dog. Maybe some Xanax would do her some good like her doctor suggested all those years ago.
Twisting the cap of the bottle between her fingers until it was screwed on way too tight she looks over at the shih tzu then up at the man whoβs lap the dog sat in. In a rare (but not unusual) whim to be social Darby speaks up. βThatβs a cute dog you got there,β Is asking for the name too annoying? Ah fuck it, she might as well. βwhatβs their name?β
