Since the answer to the lore post question was unanimous, here’s my current list of places both visited and mentioned in Tyranny that I’ve been working on. It’s separated into three parts: The Northern Empire, Kyros’ Empire (for everything else not in or confirmed to be in the North), and the Tiers. There’s a short overview of what I do know about each area, and some speculation that I did my best to note as such. This is by no means complete or 100% accurate list, let me know if there’s any corrections or additions to be made, I will change the list to reflect any new info or changes.
WARNING: TEXT DUMP & Â SPOILERS FOR TYRANNY
The Northern Empire
Battle’s Rest: A mountain hamlet where Barik was raised. Home to at least two Disfavoured bloodlines (Barikonen and presumably Lastin’s family).Â
Fort Resolution: Disfavoured army post and possibly their headquarters in the North. Has been used as a training grounds for Disfavoured soldiers and recruits.Â
Fretten Shores: Presumably located by a coast. Barik would like to spend his rusting years here, provided he doesn’t fall in battle, so it must be a decent place to live.
The Northern Capital: Either the capital of the Northern Empire or Kyros’ Capital. It could be both if Kyros moves her capital into conquered areas after they’re completely assimilated. I really hate the interchangeability of the terms “Northern Empire” and “Kyros’ Empire” in dialogue, makes figuring this out harder.
Shadow’s Rest: A settlement 20 miles away from the farming village where Sirin was born.
Tanavon Mines:Â The largest known iron deposit on Terratus before its destruction and the discovery of the Haven deposit. Was destroyed by an Edict after the Fifth & Seventh Cohorts of the Disfavoured failed to quell an uprising by the labourers in the mines. Probably located in the Northern Empire as some of the effects of the Edict (a column of green light) were visible from Fort Resolution. (mentioned in Commission short story)
Tortalus: The largest continental mountain range in the Northern Empire, and from where Cairn hailed. The Earthshaker Guild was established by Cairn on the range’s highest peak, and it’s where their initiates learn to control Stone.
Kyros’ Empire
Blazing Reach District:Â Governed by the unnamed Archon of Storms, whose personal sigil is also used as a core sigil for lightning-based magic.
Candle Mountains: Home of overworked smiths who create the iron brands used by the Scarlet Chorus. Since they work with iron, there is a slim chance they are Forge-Bound, but they’re more likely to be mundane smiths cobbling together scraps of iron into brands.
[the?] Fertile Sands: One of the homelands of some of the Tiers settlers from over 400 years ago, displaced by a war with pre-Kyros Treyn. Presumably an arid climate with areas of desert.
Ikenar Pass: Subjugated by use of the Edict of Nightfall (282 TR), which was broken by the populace rising up to slay their rulers in order to end it.
Kyros’ Capital: See Northern Capital entry and dilemma.
Medrev: Formerly ruled by the Cloud Barons, victim of Kyros’ first Edict (Storms), 0 TR.
Nettlebog: A swampland and home of the Archon Moramus of the Mire, who produced most of the area’s flora with his powers. Might be a “fungi forest” type of deal since an Archon of Fungus probably produces only fungi. (he sounds like a funguy)
Treyn: One of the homelands of some of the Tiers settlers from over 400 years ago, displaced by a war with pre-Kyros Fertile Sands.
Tunon’s Homeland: Due to Tunon’s efforts to include Kyros’ Peace in it’s own legal codes, its annexation by Kyros was only a formality.
Waterlog Marsh: (NOTE: name is translated from original, extinct language) Was once a swampy fiefdom and home of the noble House Nerat, whose youngest scion would become the Voices of Nerat. Destroyed, and stricken from maps by 431 TR.
Unknown Name: Domain of the Tundra Sovereigns, conquered in 83 TR. This may have been the home of the Northern Cannibals (see Headhunter weapon), who were all killed in 93 TR by the Overlord’s Army, well within a potential time period of active occupation after a conquest.
Unknown Name: Homeland of the Ice-Shod hunter tribe and presumably the Archon of Snow. After being assimilated by Kyros’ Empire, their knowledge of making ice weapons using the aforementioned Archon’s teachings was lost.Â
Unknown Name:Â Home of a rebellious mountain tribe on the northern part of the continent that produced the recipe for Elixirs of Quickness.
The Tiers
Apex: Ruled by Queens of House Vendrien. Took great pride in their bronze work and beekeeping. Despite being descended from seafarers, they’ve mastered alpine living. In 312 TR Apex lost most of its territory outside of Vendrien’s Well to a coalition comprised of Haven, Azure, & Stalwart, leading it to reform as an absolute monarchy under House Vendrien. Vendrien Alanta was Queen in 429 TR prior to its surrender to Kyros’ Forces.
Ardent:Â Free City known for its prowess in diplomacy and trade. However its self-serving trade deals alienated their neighbours, and their call for aid during the Conquest went unanswered. Home of the noble House Hazen, whose ancestor Hazen Rabban was a founding magistrate of the city.
Azure: Was ruled by House Variah nominally, but the landed barons handled the most of the realm’s day-to-day affairs. Breadbasket of the Tiers due to it’s fertile plains. Ridgewheat and sugarcane were grown here prior to the Conquest. Was ruled by a Queen-Regent (Variah Saris) during the Conquest.
The Bastard Tier: Ruled by a council of the wealthiest merchants in the Bastard City, which was known for it’s excess, corruption, and use as a “dumping ground” of sorts for unwanted members of Northern families.
Baris-In-Chains:Â One the three surviving Free Cities, quickly surrendered to Kyros after the destruction of Setting Sun by the Edict of Tumult.
The Five Wives: The name of the archipelago where the human settlers of the Tiers first made landfall and made their first settlements (the event is also called The Five Wives). Largely abandoned circa 431 TR.
Green Warrens: The Red Moss Poultice is a traditional remedy from here, and greenwarrens olives are likely grown here. (Speculated to exist from implications in Red Moss Poultice text & dialogue option from speaking to Kosma)
Haven: Ruled by loose alliances of Noble Houses after the rebellion of the coastal Free Cities. Was also home to the School of Tides pre-Conquest, whose aid allowed Haven to maintain control over the western seas. House Duccenius (attempted to incite insurrection against Kyros in 431 TR) is one of its noble families.
Last Harbour:Â One the three surviving Free Cities, quickly surrendered to Kyros after the destruction of Setting Sun by the Edict of Tumult.
Occon: Occon’s Ring is likely located somewhere here. Not sure if this realm is still present or subsumed by Apex and other realms, as there’s still a few living people (Old Man Mua and Baz) who respectively refer to an “old King Occon” claiming Vendrien’s Well and noting that a friend [Regg] served Occon. The weeping statue in Edgering Pass is of a centuries-ago Queen of Occon (Lycaerus, first of her name).
Setting Sun:Â One of the strongest Free Cities, it was destroyed in the Conquest by the Edict of Tumult, in 429 TR.
Spiral’s Maw: One the three surviving Free Cities, quickly surrendered to Kyros after the destruction of Setting Sun by the Edict of Tumult.
Stalwart: Prior to the Conquest, most of it’s wealth came from tolling the coastlines of the eastern seas. House Straydus holds the title of Regent in 428-431 TR, in alliance with Houses Sender and Andromus.
Sunder: One of the Free Cities on the eastern coast, gained it’s formal independence from Stalwart in 347 TR with a treaty that stipulated that Stalwart did not, in fact, lose a civil war over the matter. Known for its culture of stonemasons and architects. Ruled by a Queen prior to its destruction in the Conquest by Cairn.
Verdance: All I have is the name in my notes, and that its a realm and not a Free City. If you know anything else, let me know please. :(
