It was a pretty Saturday morning right after sunrise, which meant the sky was still cotton-candy pink and everything smelled fresh, like it was just coming out of the oven. Su loved early mornings like this-- she popped like a jack-in-the-box around 6 am very naturally, while her sisters liked to snooze-- but today was a very special morning.
She was going to the Blue Oven to help with the morning bake!
All summer, she had come in to help run the register and to pack up the orders that the Blue Oven received from different birthday parties, baby showers, wedding rehearsals, and other special events. She’d been promoted at the beginning of July to the very important job of Frosting Master, and had celebrated by practicing her piping on over 100 different cookies for her sisters.
But she hadn’t actually gotten to bake much yet. She got to scoop out batter for some of the biscuits and mind the oven; she helped prepare the different ice teas that the Blue Oven served alongside their delicious delicacies; and she had helped out with the very simple recipes, like the vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, and dipping duty for all the different chocolate-covered fruits. She had done all of this very diligently and without complaint, always thanking Terence and Zarina and keeping her work place perfectly tidy.
Her hard work had paid off. And so at 5 am in the morning, Su biked all the way to the Blue Oven and waited patiently until Terence was there to open the store.
“Good morning!” she greeted, waving at Terence and then offered a thermos to him. “I brought you a delicious blueberry green tea. It has 35 mg of caffeine and promotes good oral health for a bright, happy smile in the morning!”
