mettatenna is the kralsei of this era in the sense that it’s a lightner/darkner pairing with simple, “wholesome” canon basis but wishy-washy implications that result in discourse over whether it’s cool or not. in both cases, i sympathize with the pairing’s detractors but also think both sides are annoying; the side against is unnuanced and exaggerates how bad it is and the side for is just blue curtaining.
by deltarune “pattern” theory logic, there has to be some dubious line in chapter 5 about tenna’s current status that the shippers take literally and become more annoying
just throwing more expiration-date-attached takes out there that i haven’t yet properly vocalized. for a long time my stance on the mettaton/tenna thing has been that it’s simultaneously true that resolving tenna’s arc by giving him a New lightner to live in servitude to is very questionable and that it’s clearly the route the game is mechanically encouraging you to take (sidequest started and ended by just talking to a recurring npc; susie’s conclusion in ch3). my only idea for what they’re gonna do with that going forward is that the Big things on the horizon will change things in a way that nulls the whole situation in one way or another
