Takafumi Tsuruta - Tenbo and Tokyo Fashion Week
In 2015, Takafumi Tsuruta, head of the Tokyo brand Tenbo, featured models with a variety of physical disabilities including Paralympic gold medal swimmer, Rina Akiyamaand. The inclusion of diverse models made Tokyo yet another major fashion capital to embrace diversity on the runway.
Takafumi’s brand Tenbo was designed exclusively for individuals with disabiltiies. Specifically, he included magnetic closures on many of the garments and some of the dresses including multicolored dots were inspired by Braille. The fun, bright and delightfully whimsical designs were a refreshing addition to the group of designers including disabled models in their runway shows. As the inclusive movement continues, all bodies will be visible within the fashion industry wearing both typically conventional clothing as well as loud, avant-garde, and creative garments.
