Here's how Finland can still win
You know I think so much about the televotes. Thereās always so many numbers that you THINK would get more points, but then they donāt. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that people only vote for the ones they want to win.
Austria for example, had an incredibly catchy song this year and was well liked, but I also think a lot of us didnāt think of it as a āwinnerā song. And thus, not as many voted for it. Thus, they ended up getting only 16 points, and many of us wondering how they could POSSIBLY get so low when they deserved more.
It can also be that, you know, voting costs money. Itās not a LOT of money, but itās still money. So maybe some people just save their money by only voting for one entry, or not vote at all.
There can only be one winner of Eurovision, but you also want your faves to get good points. I myself voted for Finland, Norway, Austria and Croatia. Only two of them I knew had bigger odds at winning, but I wanted the other two to at least get as good as a placement as possible. I also usually donāt vote for so many of them, but I have not voted for several years and I always got bummed when songs I liked got so few votes. So this year I decided to just go with it and do what I could.
Then thereās also the fact that people with a completely different taste in music has as much power in voting as you do. So thereās people who did not like Austriaās song for example, thereās people who thought Finlandās song was too loud and annoying, thereās people disliking every song that you loved. (My mom for example, thought both Austria and Finlandās songs were very annoying and did not understand why anyone would like them. But she did like Denmarkās songā¦)
And thereās an age difference too. Remember, people who are 12 and people who are 45 have as much power in the voting as you do.
Thereās a bunch of different reasons to why something can get a too high or too low televote score, and while the jury definitely is our main enemy, we canāt trust each other either all the time.
Scatterplot of Eurovision votes from Juries vs. Televotes, 2019
An Alternate Alternative Eurovision Scoreboard.
The 2019 Eurovision year came to a dramatic conclusion over a month and a half ago. We have a winner and they are in the process of choosing a new host city. The process of planning for the next one has begun. But I decided to look into a different way of looking at the results.
In the name of transparency, the EBU has provided the individual placings of each song from each jury and televote from each country which shows bias for and against various nations. That canāt be helped in some ways. The most recent results have shown that the best song wins, sort of.
The current 12 point vote system allows votes to be provided to only the top 10 countries from each jury and each televote while everyone else gets a fat zero. For three countries, Austria (Semi final televote), Germany (Grand final televote) and Israel (Grand final juries), zero was the grand total they received. So I looked at a vote system where everyone receives something from each jury and each televote place received. This is something I wanted to investigate to see how the songs would place.
I have to admit once you see the information on the next part, you will see that there are no great differences as the countries did well and others did not are in a similar boat as before. While I do feel that I have wasted my time, I want to present my findings because I wasted my time instead of doing more interesting things. Here is your opportunity to run... this is a LONG article
