Oh baby...this is an excitingly rare one for #TeleTuesday! 1969 #Fender #Telecaster #Thinline in custom colour #CanaryYellow. Now I love a 'burst as much as the next guy, but I'm betting this is a far rarer guitar. Not to mention that my favourite incarnation of the Telecaster is the original 1968 "mark I" thinline model #Tele . The standard finish for this model was "Natural" but Fender made a range of custom colours available for special order in 1969 (ask @terry_foster - he has Freddie Tavares' hand-written meetings notes on which colours would be offered!). What was interesting, and what makes it more exciting for me, was that these custom colours were different from the "normal" custom colours offered on other models. Instead of boring old "Olympic White" or staid and stale "Lake Placid Blue"*, this whimsical list included such fun and frivolity as "Lavender Lilac", "Salmon", "Hot Pink", "Kerry Green", "Jet Black", and of course this one..."Canary Yellow"! Nope...these were not your granddad's run-of-the-mill custom colours! From a playability perspective I found it fascinating that it had a very full round neck carve...not something I expected from a late 60s Fender! I'd have been excited if this was just a regular natural finish model, but the vibrant (and totally different!) custom colour was just the icing on the cake for me! Every so often I like to throwback to a very special #ThinlineThursday evening I once spent, about 3.5 years ago, with #Fender Historian and author, @terry_foster and this uber rare #LavenderLilac 1970 #Thinline #Telecaster. . How do I know this finish is called "Lavender Lilac"? Well, swipe to pic 2 and you will see that Terry has, in his collection, long-time Fender designer (and the guy who played the steel guitar swoop at the beginning of the Looney Tunes cartoons), Freddie Tavares' ORIGINAL NOTES from a 1969 (?) meeting on the new custom colour Thinline models! You can see Freddie listed the different colours out in his own hand: "New colors for Telecaster hollow bodies: Jet Black, Canary Yellow, Salmon, Lavender Lilac, Hot Pink, Kelly Green". .
