A teeth cap, also known as a dental crown, is a custom-made restoration designed to cover and protect a damaged or weakened tooth. When a tooth is cracked, severely decayed, or has undergone a root canal, it often loses its natural strength. A cap restores its size, shape, and function while preventing further damage. Think of it as a protective shield that reinforces the remaining tooth structure and helps you chew comfortably without pain.

Teeth caps are especially important when more than half of the tooth structure is lost. In such cases, a simple filling may not provide enough support. Over time, the thin remaining walls of the tooth can crack under chewing pressure. A dental crown encases the entire visible portion of the tooth, holding it together and acting as a strong protective barrier. This significantly reduces the risk of complete tooth loss.

There are several materials available for dental caps. Ceramic crowns are highly popular because they closely mimic the natural translucency of enamel. They blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth, making them ideal for front teeth. Zirconia crowns, known for their exceptional strength, are often recommended for back teeth where biting forces are stronger. Gold crowns, though less common today for aesthetic reasons, are extremely durable and can last decades with proper care.

The dental cap procedure usually involves two visits. During the first appointment, the dentist reshapes the damaged tooth and takes impressions to create a perfectly fitted crown. A temporary cap is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent one is being crafted. On the second visit, the dentist checks the fit and bonds the final crown securely in place.

Most dental caps last between five and fifteen years, depending on the material used and oral hygiene habits. Regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups are essential to extend their lifespan. If you grind your teeth at night, using a night guard can prevent premature wear.
