MAYOR ATTEMPTS TO BAN HIGH SUGAR DRINKS IN ORDER TO PREVENT HEALTH ISSUES AND OBESITY
On Monday, March 10, 2013, Justice Milton A. declined Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s attempt to ban sweet drinks around New York that are 16 ounces or more due to health issues and obesity. Mayor Bloomberg is still attempting to ban high sugar drinks in places such as Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, restaurants, food carts, and movie theaters. Bloomberg said, “I’ve got to defend my children, and yours, and do what’s right to save lives”, “Obesity kills. There’s no question it kills. He also added, “We believe that the judge’s decision was clearly in error, and we believe we will win on appeal.” The Mayor is still attempting to appeal ban high sugar drinks while the Judge is not accepting what he is saying. It is said that Justice Milton A. is against this because everyone is entitled to how they want to control their own bodies and how much sugar people consume. Bloomberg is just trying to look out for the health of those in New York. Milton said, that the city is “enjoined and permanently restrained from implementing or enforcing the new regulations”. In other words the Judge feels we should be able to choose freely what we want to do. In my opinion, each Mayor Bloomberg and Judge Justice Milton A. both have logical reasons for banning or not banning 16-ounce sugar drinks. The Mayor is clearly just trying to keep the people of New York healthy. The Judge on the other hand has valuable points when pointing out people should be allowed to consume what they want to and they should makes their actions freely.
