There’s a Georgia Tech tradition that requires a rope, nerves of steel, and absolutely zero regard for your academic future ... and it’s legendary. 🐝🔧
Students scale Tech Tower, one of Atlanta’s most iconic buildings, and swing the giant “T” right off the sign. No elevator. No safety net. Just ambition, adrenaline, and probably a hacksaw. 😅
The tradition dates back to April 1969, when a secret group of students calling themselves the “Magnificent Seven” pulled off the first known theft—inspired by a similar prank at Harvard the year before, and planned as a tribute to retiring Institute President Edwin D. Harrison.
That first heist started a tradition of targeting the eastern-most “T,” since it’s the one visible from the Connector. And if you pulled it off? The T was returned at halftime of the homecoming football game. A hero’s welcome for a certified criminal. 🏈🏆
At one point, students rappelled down Tech Tower with full rappelling equipment and hacksaws to get the job done. These are engineering students, remember. They don’t half-step.
The school has tried to stop it. Georgia Tech’s own president has called for the tradition to end. And yet … the T keeps disappearing. Because some traditions are bigger than the rules.
