Techtainian Update! (the New iPad is coming)

  We have something you really need to see. And touch.

   If one compares the release dates of Apple products to say, those of HTC or Samsung, they will see a radical difference. While it seems that those big companies make a new phone or tablet every week, Apple makes long delays between its releases, building up more suspense, more excitement, and thus probably better sales. So now, almost half a year after the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple is ready to spill the beans on its latest piece of hardware. According to the teaser picture released by Apple – that of a finger poised above the date of March 7th, we can assume that apple will announce their new iPad 3 in a mere 6 days. So it would only seem appropriate to roundup all those rumours that have been circulating the web about the new Apple Monster.

Better screen? Quad-core? LTE? Until Apple’s announcement on March 7th, we will be kept guessing as to what Apple wants to spice up its new tablet with. 

Early rumours suggested that Apple was going to release two different types of the new iPad. One will be a high-end device with a 1536 x 2048 screen lit by dual-LED light bars, an 8-megapixel shooter, a quad-core A6 processor, and a 14,000mAh battery. The second one is supposedly a mid-range iPad with a 5-megapixel camera and smaller size, perhaps 8 inches or so. But it was supposed to release in January – according to DigiTimes, and now that time has past. However, in early February, John Gruber of Daring Fireball claimed that the iPad 2 will have the original iPad's 1024 x 768 resolution, while a possible new high-end model - an "iPad HD" will sport a Retina display. Perhaps he is correct, as the iPad 2 ended up shipping with the 1024 x 768. Back in 1998, after Steve Jobs came back to Apple, he eliminated a bunch of projects that he thought unnecessary. He did not want Apple overflowing the market with many devices with complicated names. He wanted simplicity. That tradition held throughout the years, with Apple releasing one device at a time. But looking at the ever growing stream of Android devices from other makers, perhaps it is a time for Apple to stray off the path and announce two devices at the same time. However, in our opinion, looking back at Apple’s previous releases, we can probably expect a single iPad 3 type with different memory sizes. 

According to The Wall Street Journal and CNBC the new iPad will have LTE. If that is indeed true, and if the iPad will be quad-core, we can expect a whole world of awesomeness. Talking about quad-core, not so long ago a quick picture was taken of supposed logic board for the next generation iPad. In the middle is the A5X chip. One can call it the A6, as perhaps it is the update to the A5 chip that is currently powering the iPad 2. But will the A6 chip be quad-core? Some sources say otherwise but do not give up hope, for only time will tell. But like we said, only time will tell. And that time is very, very, soon.

Looking at various reports of the cases and backing of the iPad 3, we can assume that the iPad 3 will have the same shape as the previous iteration. That’s not exactly a bad thing, as the iPad’s 2 design was very nice and smooth. It is kind of familiar, as the iPhone 4S came out with practically the same external case as the iPhone 4. Looks like Apple’s pulling the trick again and doing the same thing with the new iPad. Or not. Although the case may be the same for both, rumours suggest that the case of the iPad 3 is slightly thicker than that of the iPad 2, probably to accommodate the bigger battery and the other improved hardware. The iLab site has gotten hold of the alleged new back casing and a newly-designed dock connector. Looking at the image, one can see that the iPad 3’s new backcase has a different camera hole in comparison to the iPad 2.

With March 7 fast approaching, we’d better brace ourselves for the onslaught of iPad insanity that will be next week!  The rumour mills are crazed with iPad rumours – will the iPad 3 have a different screen resolution, will it be quad-core, thicker or thinner?  Only time will tell but either way next week will bring us the third generation of the tablet that changed it all!
