IDENTITY AND THE TECHNOLOGY GENERATION
I overheard a conversation 3 high school kids were having on the bus. One of the girls explained that she was having a dress made for her sweet 16, inspired by Beyonce’s 2017 Met Gala dress. This is the dress she was referring to:Â
Just using Beyonce as an example, so Beehive, don’t get offended. The conversation I eavesdropped and others have me concerned with the Millennial generation and the generations to come, as they are constantly absorbed with pop culture. Technically, I and anyone over the age of 18 and no older than 34 can call themselves a millennial. However, social media was not apart of my daily life until I was 15 years old. The Myspace days. Currently, social media, and pop culture has a daily affect in the younger half of this generations lives.Children are using the internet practically out of the womb. It has impacted many areas of their lives, mostly in diction, self image and their aspirations.
Emojis, social media, direct messaging are all things that have made its way into pop culture and is used by Millennials, as a way of communicating. The words and phrases of today, have become shortened and harder to decipher. Films, television and even music videos project these images which in return, influences the young minds of the youth. The aftermath of this is the inability to write or properly hand write a letter, Essays in school are now filled with lol, smh, and omg, which is a heartbeat away from being in the dictionary.Â
Is the Millennial generation becoming less innovative? Are we all for that matter? All I see are mini Nicki Minaj’s when I go out, lace front wigs people are going broke to have made, and an overall lack of originality. I see now more than ever before young women injecting garbage into their bodies to look like the celebrities they idolize. When in reality, these girls don’t realize these women don’t even look like that. It’s called air brushing and hours in a make up chair.
At one point or another, all people long for what they don’t obtain. With Youtube making every nonsensical thing worthy of fame, this only welcomes this impressionable generation, to think they can all reach the same level of fame, in ways that can lack hard work. Being envious to be just like their idols, they’ll do anything to be just like them, instead of being themselves. Like start fights in the street, or showcase their bodies in nearly there outfits, even worse things that I won’t name. I know we are all guilty of following trends, however the previous generations didn’t have the internet and social media trolls to be pressured by, nor was endangering yourself the price of fame.
I wrote this because I know that it is easy to get caught up in the lives of the rich and famous. What I do hope is that the younger generations realize that innovation, uniqueness, and individuality does not require them to belittle themselves or, look like someone else. All that we see from the elite is made up of mostly images. Images that are blinding and often misleading. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a hater of my generation, how can I be, I’m writing a blog post, via a computer. Indeed, much positivity has come from the Millennial generation, things that are very beneficial. I just can’t overlook all that has influence this superficial way the youth can often think, most of which I believe has come from the influence of social media and pop culture. It’s everywhere you look and it’s all just smoke in mirrors.
I actually laughed out loud at this, although I probably shouldn't have! Lol! #truth #reality #reallife #welcometomyworld #sadbuttrue #technologyage #iphone #zombie #thisisourfuture #funny #notfunny #humor
