Unforseen Debts
The rattling of the doorknob was unexpected. The twins stopped what they were doing and looked up, then at one another: Adrian sketching on the windowsill, Marcos slowly mending a pair of jeans on the bed. When a knock sounded, insistence bordering on aggression, Marcos reached out of habit for the absent holster he only wore on-duty. Adrian followed the movement, apprehension tightening the corners of his eyes. Marcos dropped the jeans beside him and stood.
@technohavoc
Hey... you there? Itās Marcos.
9, 10, 11!
9. How hard would it be for them to live as their single, genuine self?
Not too hard? I mean, he isnāt forthcoming, but he isnāt actively trying to be someone heās not, yāknow? Really, the hard part would be admitting all the time to things like the bouts of possessive jealousy, and the fact that he leans on certain responses (outburts of anger and frequent irritability, for example) because it means he doesnāt necessarilyĀ haveĀ to address underlying issues he might have. (There are certain people in his life heād rather not have see some of the uglier parts of him, and a lotĀ of people he wouldnāt want knowing that he comes with some heftyĀ emotional baggage.)
10. When, if ever, are they completely genuine?
At home, maybe? But even then, heās not exactly sharing the full picture of what goes on in his head that makes him behave the way he does. The best look into the way he ticks is probably when heās drunk, maybe a little tired, at home, and (if weāre looking for entirely uncensored thoughts and behaviors) alone.
11. If theyāre an adult, have they gained masks as they aged, or simplified?
Heās definitely gained a few masks as heās gotten older. Heās put on masks that exaggerate his aggression and makes him out to be an intimidating, antagonistic figure for work, and those have their own little, like, facets/subsets depending on what the situation may call for. I think heās still picking a few up as he figures out and settles into his roles in Battery City.Ā
But, in a way, things have also simplified? Most of his masks can be put into one of two categories: personal, and professional. The personal ones are for friends and family--the people he doesnāt want to lie to, but also doesnāt want to see the deep-running faults he has. And the professional ones are (obvi) for work. Indifference and aggression and a distinct lack of opinions are generally close to the core of those ones, typically because thatās all thatās really asked of him, and it makes his job easier when thatās all people see when they look at him. So at their cores, the masks have simplified, but there are still more specified ones he picks up as he goes through life.
1, 2, & 3 for both of them!
1. Do they have many personalities/masks, or only a few?Marcos: Only a few. Private, public, around Giovanni, and (in the past) for sex work.Adrian: A little more than Marcos, because he tends to tailor himself more on a per-person basis. E.g. Anders and Katherine would see a slightly different person.
2. What are the most dramatically different masks they take on?Marcos: Who he is at home with Adrian, compared to who he is on a patrol with Giovanni. Adrian: Who he is defending Marcos in any sense of the word, compared to who he is while playing the role of innocent and ignorant pushover for a variety of jobs.
3. Is it important to them that others believe theyāre being genuine?Marcos: He doesnāt really think about this, because for the most part he always thinks of himself as being genuine. The exception is when heās around Giovanni, at which time heād rather people know he /wasnāt/.Adrian: Yes, very much so. Itās very important to him that people like him and approve of him, so heās especially upset when, for instance, Anders picks up on his faked enthusiasm or the like.

Back in a Few
Marcosā jeans were a couple of inches too long. Heād shoved the hems down into his boots, where they bunched up around his ankles. Not that something like that would get a second glance in Neon, where the predominant fashion - if such a thing could be said to exist - was more aligned with an aggressive sort of anti-fashion. Besides, he didnāt mind. The uniforms heād been allotted all fitted him precisely; the slight discomfort of ill-fitting clothing was a familiarity that he missed sometimes, after long days in the city.
When he arrived at the coordinates, he kept walking. A cold drizzle was falling, halfway between thin rain and snow. His collar was turned up against his neck, his hands in his pockets. The apartment complex seemed normal enough as he passed. Half a block down, he leaned against a telephone pole and pulled out his radio, his breath fogging in the air.
