TechnoFist Presents: Grown Man Business 026 with Juana by TechnoFist Serious Bio Hi, I’m Juana. I’m a house and techno DJ and producer currently residing in Washington, DC. Originally from Chicago, I grew up in an incredibly musical family, where I was surrounded by all kinds of sounds, from blues and classical to jazz, disco, country, R&B, and metal. I know everybody says they grew up around everything, but I’m serious. Those people are crazy. And they taught me to love and appreciate all music from its core. My first record was a gift from my mom at age 4 – Stevie Wonder’s “Hotter Than July.” It’s still a favorite. Anyway, I started collecting vinyl when I was in college and I always knew a lot of DJs because I spent a lot of time on the dancefloor in the underground rave and club scene. Somebody told me I should try DJing around 2000 or so, and I started doing gigs at parties and bars around Chicago. I moved to DC in 2002 and landed guest spots at underground house clubs in DC, such as Red and DC Sanctuary, and numerous underground one-offs. I also played weekly shows on HandzOnRadio (BMore) and CyberJamz (Tampa), and regularly worked in a blend of deep house, techno, disco, new wave, and rare groove. It was a good run, but my heart has always been in the hard hitting sounds of techno, especially that of Detroit. I think if you listen to any techno mixes I do, my love for disco divas and funky jazz definitely shines through. It’s all soulful, even if it doesn’t fit in somebody else’s box. If I fits, I sits. Heavily influenced and inspired by Kenny Dixon Jr., Osunlade, Ron Trent, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, Omar S, Kai Alce, Vince Watson, and Pepe Bradock. I would not be doing this if not for their music. Since 2014, I have been doing regular monthlies at Dr. Clock’s Nowhere Bar (Chicago Style, Tech Support) and in 2015, I joined the One Love Massive collective, so you’ll see me around. Weaknesses include writing about myself in the third person. http://ift.tt/1VXT59a http://ift.tt/23e0gcn
