Tonight I watched a video on YouTube that attempted to clear up the mystery of how this scene was accomplished in Star Trek IV The Voyage home..
What I thought it was was (probably) totally incorrect I've found out.
Apparently, the Mac Plus was a modified one with a 24FPS CRT TV replacing the macs monitor and it was being fed footage from a video tape system that was made on an IBM PC rather than any Apple hardware.
They designed it to mimic what Mac OS (then called "System #" instead of Mac OS #) looked like but it kinda threw me off because to it resembles the GUI OS on Apple // machines to me more than Mac OS especially because it didn't have the black border around the desktop and it as significantly lower resolution. Unlike this example:
I just always thought they hooked up an Apple // offscreen and used GS/OS there.. Such as this example which IMHO looks a lot more like the screen in Star Trek 4 apart from the color.
Hell, all the computer screens in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home looked like they where rendered on 8-bit Apple hardware to me.. haha..

Summery: This is a story about the two sides of winter people. The ones who hated it and the ones who love it. And guess what, these two became pretty good friends beforehand, but can the winter lover bring some christmas sprit to her grinch friend?
Note: This is my first real work and a test for later. I try to get into writing and publishing my writing. I wrote a lot over the past 4 years but never come to post something of it. So have fun with this little holiday special. It starts slightly angsty but it will get fluffy at the end. I put in the beginning some headcannons I have for Nick.
Wordcount: 829
Nick Valentine hated winter. Hate is even for him a strong word but the coldest time of the year didn“t do something good to him at all. It already starts in autumn, when the leaves started to fall and the humidity gets unbearable high. He always needed to be careful that his unprotected hand didn“t rust away, but especially in the wet days of fall, the humidity crept into his core like cold crept into bones. He felt like, he was corroding from the inside.
But that wasn“t the worst of this time. Nick needed to change his coolant twice a year. When the days became colder, he needed one with anti-freeze in it, which was thicker and his pumps had more work to do to keep it circulating if needed. The process of exchanging was humiliating, too. He needed half a day, just sitting there and waiting until the old coolant was out and the new coolant with the anti-freeze got pumped in. Just sitting with an open chest and waiting. Nick tried to distract himself from the terrible feeling he always got in the process by reading. He read a book or went through some case files. Besides him was always a cigarette burning. Sometimes, he put it to his lips. This old habit from his former self was soothing somehow, even if he didn“t get something out of it physically. Until the new coolant was finally in him, he emptied a whole package. Fortunately, cigarettes was still as common to find as NukaCola.
He cannot bear company during this time. Ellie sometimes helped with the tubing, but he didn“t want to bother her too much with it. He didn“t want her to saw him so vulnerable. Heck, he only can bear to be seen like this by people he really can trust, which was Ellie, Nora by now and his first mechanic, he didn“t know his name anymore. He did many of his repairs by himself most of the time, but sometimes he just needed a helping hand.
But the coolant wasn“t his only issue in the winter. His joints got stiff in the cold and exchanging the lubricant was a far more difficult tasked, so he often stayed inside when the weather got too extreme, which wasn“t always possible. Nick had been once surprised by a snowstorm, which were pretty rare after the bombs and even more unpredictable. It had frozen him to one place. As a human, he probably would had been dead, but he wasn“t keen on waiting until summer to be finally able to move, again either. But he had been lucky. He was found by a caravan who he had helped out once. They had warmed him up and escorted him back to diamond city. This winter he found enough excuses to not leaving his agency or at least DC.
And last but not least, he was haunted by memories, which wasn“t his own. Prewar Nick Valentine loved winter and especially Christmas. The lights, the smells, the food. And he had loved it because Jenny had loved it. She had decorated the house, cooked and baked the most delicious food. What would he do to properly taste food, again. The institute messed up his taste buds, but hey at least he got some. Even if food hadn“t a big effect on him physically like smoking. The food just got combusted and produced some heat, but that“s all. And through his messed up taste buds, it even didn“t taste good. Sometimes, Nick“s memories made it better, remembering the taste, but nether the less, he didn“t enjoy eating anymore. Food was also a rare resource and the people of the Commonwealth need it more than him.
Nick shook his head to dispel the memories, which stung in his chest. Maybe it was his pumps fighting with the thicker coolant. He thought, after killing Eddie Winters, Nick Valentine was finally gone, but his memories were still there. He still lives in him with all his good and bad times. But especially the good times were the ones hurting the most. The memories of Nick“s fiance smile, even if it became indistinct.
The good thing was, the people of the Commonwealth didn“t know the traditions anymore. They had other problems to deal with than buying expensive presents and decorating a way too big tree. So, this memories weren“t directly triggered around every corner. Maybe it would had been something else, if the bombs dropped two month later. He only was reminded of Halloween here and there, which was kinda ironic in a post apocalyptic world. And in all his years around the Commonwealth, he only saw two or three times really snow, which he wasn“t mad about.
Nick was pulled out of his thoughts when his door opens. Still sitting there with an open chest.
So, I have a near-encyclopaedic knowledge of (most of) the dialogue across the Mass Effect games, which gives me a good starting point for trying to remember when people say things tangentially related to other things. However, you donāt have to have that to do what I am doing!
For gaps in my knowledge or just generalĀ āthing-findingā exercises, I have three enormous spreadsheets which are text dumps of every single spoken line by every single character across all three games. I can set up a filter to isolate a specific character and then CTRL+F words to see if thereās anything worth using. This isnāt foolproof because of technical reasons, but it provides an excellent starting point.
I seem to recall thisĀ āOh yeah?ā being a kind of teasing, possibly even passing for sort of sultry response. It could work in a number of different interactions with Joker, so itās worth saving. The spreadsheet lists what main file I need to access, then what conversation file. From there itās a pretty simple matter of finding the right node in the Dialogue Editor and extracting the audio file.
Then, I give it a name and add it to my database of lines I have saved for her. If there is something distinct or interesting about the line, for example if it contains a laugh or a breath or is read in a particular tone, I mark that down. Over time Iāve ended up with a pretty big database.
So, I try to think of the general gist of what I want her to say. I find a few lines that I think might work... I try slicing and splicing them together in different ways in Audacity.
TheĀ āHehe, I already figured that out. Itās not a big deal. Iāll look forward to our next talk.ā Line is a splice together of five different lines across all three games, including laugh, words, and different breaths that give the impression of the kind of pauses sheās meant to be injecting. Sometimes, I need to mess with the volume levels of the samples to keep them sounding consistent. ME1ā²s lines in particular are very inconsistent with the volume so I often have to mess with them to get them to fit together.
For Jeff, the process is very similar. I look through my database of lines from the game, and I see if anything works.
If it doesnāt work, or if itās a vanilla line that needs adjusting, I use an AI synth to replicate his voice. The AI was trained on 422 lines of Jokerās dialogue and has a custom made speech pattern synthesizer. It provides a good basis for working on, however, I nearly always need to heavily and extensivelyĀ edit the lines to make them sound human. I can control the speed, duration, and pitch of each individual letter in a sentence I tellĀ āhimā to read out. By moving letters and words up or down I can drastically alter the reading of the line. But, the synth has its limitations, and the process is very time consuming.
When the line sounds about as good as I think I can make it, I import it into Audacity and edit it further, cutting sentences apart for better and more natural pauses between words, and adding in breaths, laughs, or other vocal tics sourced from vanilla audio or other samples of the actorās speech. I probably spend an average of an hour or more on each one of his synth-produced lines.
When I started this project, it was Jokerās lack of contextually relevant lines that was the real limiter, here, and now Iām finding itās the opposite. Jennifer Haleās Shepard has a massive bank of lines to select from, literally hundreds of romantic or flirtatious reads, teasing jibes, simple inquiries, almost anything I want and that still creates limitations. Not every set of words I want will fit together well. She doesnāt have everything in the tone I want, or the emphasis. She doesnāt say his name very much. At this point, I actually have much more power to make Jeff direct the romance than I do Shepard.
I mean... Iāll be real here, Iād love to just hire Seth Green and Jennifer Hale for this, but I sorta... donāt think theyād exactly leap at the chance to help out with this, hahaha! Theyāre very busy people, and I am just a simple artist with not a lot of power in terms of financial compensation. I certainly could not pay them industry rates.
If only I could get a few key phrases directly from them, though... Ah, the dream.
I wonder what these Aeorian beasts eat? Matt hasn't described any desecrated corpses and I don't think there'd be any other physical food source so do they need to eat at all? I'm pretty sure they're man-made so maybe not, or they absorb magic for sustenance instead.
The warp-faced weaves of the Andes are the most complex in the world, with up to eight warp levels. While existing studies of Andean textiles use a technical language derived from other textile traditions, this book takes as its starting point the technical terms in the Aymara and Quechua languages used by Andean weavers themselves. The result is a completely new way of understanding one of the great craft traditions of the world.Ā The authors' work is truly groundbreaking. This is a highly technical book that sets out the authors' alternative classification system via tables, photographs and diagrams. But it is also a celebration of a brilliant and sophisticated weaving tradition. Each technique is described in detail, with technical details and historical development with accompanying photographs and some computer renderings.

my biggest flaw is listening to Valentine by 5SOS and being completely in love with the lyrics, and devastated at the same time.
please, every time i create a new fic of how me and the love of my life we āāgo on a date where he/she will say these cute things to me
Ever wondered what goes into creating your favourite productions? Those moments of magic (or macabre) where you go 'How did they do that?!' In our new Special Effects series, we'll be discovering how the worlds on stage come to life by exploring the worlds off stage, talking to the creatives and crews from some of the UK's biggest shows and theatre companies.
This month, we're looking at stage blood and effects in two infamously bloody shows. We spoke to the Company Stage Manager on Michael Grandage's The Lieutenant of Inishmore and the Designer of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Tamburlaine, who shared their practices (and a few secrets).
Lovely detailed article about the use of blood in theatre.Ā Apparently there is a secret recipe that can never be shared. Wonderful explanation of gore, how it gets cleaned up and why it tastes like candyfloss
