The hardest thing about resumes is the fact that everyone's taste is different. I'm going to list some general, what everyone is looking for. But really your resume needs to stay true to your taste, because then you'll be hired by someone who probably gets you.

Some to-do's:

1. Clean lay out. Good spacing and balance. This shows attention to detail, organization and care put into the application. If you have columns, make sure the entire resume is uniform with them. Gotta make it look sexy. So the company knows you're sexy and wants to keep dating you...I mean hiring you...

2. Put your most relevant information at the top. This is one of those "matter of taste" things. So do what you think is best. However, only put education at the top of your resume during school and about a year after you graduate. Then move it to the bottom.

3. Pick a font size easy to read.

4. Most people ask for a cover letter. Take half an hour to go to their website and learn about their company, then reference the specific things you like about their company. This is also good during interviews because it shows you like them specifically. It's like a date. You've gotta make them feel special. 

5. Keep it relevant to the job you are applying for. Anything random looks like filler. Fluff your resume with special skills that are relevant. 

6. Grammar check EVERYTHING. Especially your letter. This seems stupid to list but some of the letters I read...I couldn't believe they were about to graduate college. But it was probably just because they hadn't let someone else read it. MAKE EVERYONE YOU KNOW READ IT. Especially people who's intelligence and opinion you trust. 

7. Find a way to make it unique. Like a personal logo or I've heard there's a new trend to put a small picture of yourself in one of the upper corners. 

8. Take five minutes to try to look up who you are applying to. If you want an electrics internship, see who the M.E. is and mention them in your cover letter.

9. List specific things you want to learn. How you want to grow. How the company will help you grow.

Some to-don'ts:

1. While working on a show, if you were a one-man crew who did everything: "LD, board op, electrician, spot op...etc" do not list all of that. The most listed should be "LD & ME." Then if they ask during an interview, elaborate. 

2. Most theatre professionals don't care about awards your school gave you.

3. Don't use improper syntax. Know your field. 

4. Don't misspell the name of the company or the person you're applying to.

5. Don't undersell yourself. When you are in undergrad, list EVERYTHING that is relevant to your field. Also remember you are awesome. It's tricky not to sound cocky, but to come across confident. You need to make sure they know you are sexy and competent. This isn't a time to be humble.
