Week 9 Tutorial: Project 2 Presentation
The aim of this week was to present our Project 2: Rendering. Everyone in my studio tutorial was separated into three groups with each tutor: ROB, WILL, and MAX. I was in MAXās group. Everyone required to pin-up their Project 2 and makes it in such a way as an exhibition. We have 3 minutes to present and we were not allowed to use anyĀ computer during the presentation.Ā
Reflection
For my presentation, I brought a couple of things which are:
+ MY FINAL RENDERING POSTER [Mounted on Black Foam Core] + MY DRAFT RENDERING POSTER + MY MATERIAL RESEARCH POSTER + MY PRODUCT CONSUMER RESEARCH POSTER + TWO OF MY INDUSTRIAL RENDERING VISUAL RESEARCH POSTER + MY SIMILARITY PRODUCT RESEARCH POSTER + MY BANG&OLUFSEN BEOLIT 17 SPEAKER [REAL PRODUCT] + MY BANG&OLUFSEN BEOPLAY P2 [REAL PRODUCT]
[Notification: Most of the posters pictures can be seen in WEEK 8 TUTORIAL]
This my working on Project 2: Rendering:
+ THE DRAFT RENDERING POSTER This was my first rendering design layout and I was thinking to submit this, but I got some feedback from my class mates and tutors. One of the most common feedbacks that I got was ātry not to make it as an advertisementā. Therefore, I decided to change my layout to the one below this picture.
+ THE FINAL RENDERING POSTER This is my second design layout and I felt like itās better than the first one because the aim of this project is to show your rendering skills, not to create an advertisement. I have zoom in my rendering, which means everyone can see the small details and the textures. I wanted to make my layout simple so I decided just to put the B&O logo andĀ āBEOLIT 17ā³. Additionally, I also made the background in a greyscale gradient so then it would make my rendering product more appealing and eye-catching.Ā
After presenting, what I could say are:
+ My preparation for my presentation was good. + My speaking was moderate. I spoke clearly, but as I started to become nervous, I began to stutter.Ā + My body language was good. I made eye-contact with the audiences. + In general, I am satisfied with my presentation as I came with everything prepared and ready to go.Ā
Besides, Iāve got a few improvements and those are:
+ I want to improve my speaking because English is my second language and I want to become more fluent and articulate in the way I communicate. Itās good to improve my speaking because speaking is one of the main skills that I used every day to communicate with people.
+ I want to improve my presentation timing. I went over 3 minutes and luckily my tutor is nice enough to give me extra time. Although, I want to get my timing right by practice presenting with time beforehand.Ā
+ I want to improve my background design. I got some feedback from my tutor and he said that I should make the background brighter because the choice of colors that I chose for my rendering is mostly dark and itās hard to see the rendering. When I look at it, I noticed that too. I shouldāve done better and this is why I want to improve it if I have the chance to do it again.
Overall this was a fun and creative. I like that my hard work was paid off as I got the chance to present my final work with everyone. I feel proud and satisfied of my achievements so far. I really enjoyed this project and I hope Iām going to have the chance to do something similar in the future.Ā
Week 3 Studio Tutorial - Cross Sections & Dimensions
The aim of this week was to construct a machine component below in four different views, which are [+] on an A3 paper drawn using our drafting equipment.Ā
+ THE TOP VIEW + THE SECTION VIEW A-A PLUS THE FRONT VIEW + THE BOTTOM VIEW + THE RIGHT SIDE VIEW
Reflection
In this tutorial, Iāve learned new knowledgeĀ and several skills in constructing objects. Those several things were:
+ I understood of the section A-A view definition, which is the view of a half cut object.Ā
+ I understood that the section A-A view and the front view can combine together into one drawing.
+ I understood that the top view is the most important and a key view to all of the other views. Usually, people can construct the other views without the top views, but I would prefer to construct the top view first because it makes it easier to draw the others without measuring again.Ā
+ I understood the page layout and where every component should be located. The examples of the components are the title, name, labels, borders, item description, and other important information that should be on the page.
This is my working:
Difficulty: There were several difficulties when analyzing, drawing and labeling. Firstly, it was hard for me to imagine the object in half cut for the section A-A drawing because the instruction only provided the 3D view and the top view of the object. Secondly, when I was drawingĀ the right side view, it was hard for me to viewĀ the right side of the object properly. Thirdly, when labeling the drawing, the hardest part was the dash lines of the circle for the top view and theĀ bottom view.Ā
Error: The mistake I made was that I drew the object close to the right when I shouldāve drawn it further to the left. This happened because I didnāt plan my drawing and I put all of the drawings in the middle, but I didnāt know that it needed extra space on the right side.
Resolve: To not make this mistake again for the future drawing and project, I should plan the page layout and drawings.Ā
Overall in this tutorial, the exercise was enjoyable and challenging. Iāve gained new knowledge in tech drawing, especially the skill in drawing the section A-A view. It was a good tutorial and Iām looking forward to doing something new next week.Ā
Week 10 Tutorial: Project 3 Measurement & Model Making
The aim of this week was to start on the Project 3 by learning how to measure and model making. We were required to bring our Project 3 product to the studio tutorial along with our drawing equipment, vernier callipers, bamboo skewers, cardboards, and some useful equipment that might help to measure our product.
I brought in my dumbbell and my kettle. I wasnāt sure which one to choose between these two so I was thinking just took them both to test measure. In the tutorial, I got a briefĀ introduction to measurement tools by Gabe Norman and he advised us to use:
+ VERNIER CALIPER + BAMBOO SKEWERS + PROFILE GAUGE + CALIPER + CRAMPING TOOL AND RULERS
He was really helpful. Iāve receivedĀ a lot of tips and tricks from Gabe on how to measure my dumbbell and kettle. Within these two products, I chose the dumbbell because there were a lot of people who picked kettle to be their product.Ā
I tried to measure my dumbbell and it seemed to be going well. I used the calliper, rulers, and vernier calliper to measure the product. I used the calliper to get the length of side of the dumbbell and used rulers to measure the length I took from the callipers then record it. I did this to both sides of the weight of the dumbbell. For the small weigh that is at the end of both sides of the dumbbell, I used a vernier calliper to measure it. I found out that vernier calliper is more accurate than the calliper because itās electronic. For the middle handle on the dumbbell, I used a normal ruler to measure it and it was pretty accurate.Ā
The measurements of:Ā [All dimension in millimeters]
+ TOTAL LENGTH: 300 + TOTAL WIDTH: 150 + MIDDLE HANDLE: 198 + FIRST SIDE WEIGH: 24 THICKNESS | 150 DIAMETERS [BOTHSIDES] + SECOND SIDE WEIGH: 18 THICKNESS | 105 DIAMETERS [BOTHSIDES] + THIRD SIDE WEIGH: 9 THICKNESS | 40 DIAMETERS [BOTHSIDES]
After all of the measurements, I constructed a general rough sketch on AUTOCAD and this is how it looks:Ā
I made it in such a way that I could use it as templates to cut it out for my model making. I hope itās going to be useful and I am looking forward to making my dumbbell model.Ā

Week 4 Studio Tutorial - Drawing with CAD
The aim of this week was to construct an object (PIVOT BASE) in third angle orthogonal projection by using the AutoCAD program. The orthogonal projection that is required to draw:
+ THE TOP VIEW + THE FRONT VIEW + THE RIGHT SIDE VIEW
Reflection
In this tutorial, there are several new skills and knowledge that Iāve learned from AutoCAD software. Those several new things were:
+ I understood the basic understanding of what AutoCAD is used for. AutoCAD is a drafting software application that can be used to create models [2D & 3D] for a particular purpose.
+ I understood several new terms that are used by AutoCAD. For example:Ā āFILLETā = curved edges.
+ I got familiar with the tool features in AutoCAD such as creating lines, circles rectangles, trimming, labeling dimensions, creating texts, creating layers, and much more.
+ In general, this exercise taught me how to use AutoCAD software and due to my experience with other similar software,Ā it didnāt takeĀ me long to figure it out.Ā
This is my working on AutoCAD:
Difficulty: There are several difficulties that I encountered while using AutoCAD for the first time. The first difficulty is deselecting the tool features. It wasnāt hard, but it took me too long to figure out how to exit to the normal mode where I always have to right click and cancel. Although, my tutor has given me some assistance and the fastest way to deselecting a tool is the āescā key on the keyboard. The second difficulty was aligning the sketches together. When I tried to align one sketch to the other one, it always had a 1-2 mm gap. I guess there is an option or technique to do it that I havenāt figured out yet. The third difficulty is the labeling. On my mac, there was something wrong with the labeling text size. I took me about 30 minutes to figure how to customize the size and font. It wasnāt that hard, but it took me awhile.Ā
Error: I noticed that I misplaced my title block along with the name and description. It shouldnāt be on the top at all because according to the EngineerĀ Drawing book, it should be at the bottom right corner.
Resolve: I just need to plan the page layout and put everything in place where it supposed to be.
Overall in this tutorial, it was fun playing around with the AutoCAD software as well as learning at the same time too. I like using software and I have found myself interested in AutoCAD. I am certain that Iām going to use AutoCAD most of the time in my upcoming projects and the future. Iām excited about the upcoming exercises after talking to my tutor I found out that we are going to practice more drawing on AutoCAD which will involve more complex things than this week. Iām looking forward to future challenges with AutoCAD.
Week 1 Studio Tutorial - Drawing Instrument Exercises
The aim of this week was to construct several shapes and figures by using our drafting equipment. The following figures are:
Figure I
Figure II
Figure III
Reflection
When I first looked at the guideline, I thought these figures would be easy to to draw using a compass and ruler.Ā It was actually hard. I was struggling to find a method to draw all of these figures until I gotĀ guidanceĀ from my class tutor. Iāve learned several technical skills in design drawing and have aĀ better understanding of design tools such as:
+ The use of T Square tool - straightening the drawing paper | guiding instrument to construct horizontal, vertical, and diagonalĀ lines
+ The use of Removable tape - making the drawing paper to stay in place from preventing any movementĀ while constructing lines and shapes
+ The use of Set Square Set - constructing any direction of lines
+ The use of Circle Template - constructing rounded and circular shapes
These are my workings:
Figure I
Error: When outlining the figure, I wasĀ accidentally outlined over several parts that I shouldnāt be outlined. I wasnāt paying much attention until I compared with the original figure.
Resolve: I need to focus more on the details as well as sketching the outline that is supposed to be outlined and erase all the unnecessary sketching lines.
Figure II
Error: When outlining the figure, the difficult part was the small curved edges, I didnāt outline it well as it doesnāt blend with the big curved lines.Ā
Resolve: To make the curved edges blend with the big curved lines, my opinion is before outlining, I should sketch it perfectly with pencil first.Ā
Figure III
This figure wasnāt too difficult to construct. AmongĀ the three figures, I really like this one the most because it was simple to construct, also the shape of this figure is not complex with the comparison of the others two.Ā
**Combination of figure III in a tiling pattern
Overall, it seems like Iāve learned several new things in this week studio exercises. It wasnāt that easy or that hard. I enjoyed these DRAWING INSTRUMENT EXERCISES and hope to do more in the future.Ā
Week 6-7 Tutorial: Photoshop Rendering
The aim of this week was to construct a 2D Photoshop rendering of a modified Remington Pro Ionic hair dryer using Adobe Photoshop CC. The final rendering must look similar to the following sample below:
We were allowed to change the colour of the rendering to our reference as long as the design looks the same to the sample.Ā
Reflection
In this tutorial, I learnt a couple of new skills in Adobe Photoshop. Those skills were:
+ I understood how rendering work in Photoshop. It was my first time using this features because I never knew it before until today tutorial class.
+ I understood how to adjust the levels of the color tones of the image by using [IMAGE ADJUSTMENTS DESATURATE] feature and how to remove any residual dots or dust marks by using [FILTER NOISE DUST & SCRATCHES] feature.Ā
+ I understood how to create paths for each part of the object and how to use pen tools to trace over the pictures in order to create the outlines for the paths.
+ I understood how to generate masks on the layer groups that Iāve created and refined the color scheme.Ā
+ I understood how to apply shading and reflection on drawing by using brush tools and how to detailing the object by adding an outline and part line details.
+ I understood how to apply texture and create graphics and background to make it more professional looks.Ā
This is my working on Rendering:Ā
FINAL RENDERING:
Difficulty: I encountered a few difficulties when rendering. The first difficulty was outlining the drawing using the pen tool. It was hard for me to draw the curving section and this happened because I did not fully understood how to use the pen tool. It was my first time using the pen tool, but after watching some tutorial videos and got some help from my tutors I fully understood how to use the pen tool feature correctly. The second difficulty was when I need to apply the masks. It sounds easy and it is easy, but the annoying part was getting the masks to the correct size. I didnāt get it right a few times and I have to go back and edit my paths and come back to apply the masks back to the layer again. The process was frustrating but I was able to get it done. Lastly, the third difficulty was shading. It wasnāt supposed to be hard for me, but it seems like I need to improved more skill in shading. I couldnāt get the right shading and by that, I meant shadow and light. Sometimes I applied too much shadow and sometimes too much light and this made the drawing look unrealistic. However, I managed myself to get it right after trying for a couple of times.Ā
Error:Ā Firstly, I realided that my shading on the product on some part is quite off. Secondly, I feel like the outlines of the product are not smooth and thirdly,Ā the background colour is not that attractive and I should'veĀ done it better.
Resolve: To solve the first problem, I should do more shading and understand better from watching the tutorial/professional video on rendering and apply it. To the second problem, I should edit by adjusting the āstrokeā feature in Photoshop. Finally for the third problem, I could use the brush tool and apply the gradient colour to the background and this would give me an attractive background.
Overall in this tutorial, it was challenging at first because it was my first time doing rendering in Adobe Photoshop, but as I went through, itās getting easier. Iām satisfied with what I have achieved in this tutorial. It was fun and risky, but it was worth it. Also, Iāve heard about the upcoming project 2 in which itās going involve rendering product like this so I think it is good to have a practice before the real thing start. Iām looking to apply all of my rendering skills in project 2.
