teaser: wedding - groomsmen au x jiung
for self-accountability purposes!! i hope to release this before the week ends. for context: jiung is a groomsman, and keeho is the best man. y/n is the cousin of the bride. this is the first meeting of jiung and y/n.
it’s not until the bridal party breaks for a late lunch that you get the opportunity to sit down and take a breather.
“here,” a voice, smooth as the finest silk, says as a small fan emerges from the corner of your eye.
“thank you,” you mumble, suddenly shy. you’re never like this, usually warm and friendly towards new people, but for some reason this jiung guy has thrown you off guard.
“don’t mention it,” he says, reaching towards his bento box, eagerly digging into the food.
the two of you sit in comfortable silence as all around you, the chatter lowers to a comfortable hum. it’s around three hours til showtime, and while most of the work is done, there’s still a whole evening and afterparty ahead of you.
“do you like egg yolks, by any chance?” you ask sheepishly, glancing towards jiung. at the end of the table, you know that your cousin and her future husband are conducting a similar exchange.
“as a matter of fact, i do.”
wordlessly, you carve out the hard boiled egg yolk and gift it to him, biting back a laugh.
“while a lot of people think that egg yolks are unhealthy due to its high cholesterol content, they’re also rich in vitamins A, B, D, E, and K, and they’re a good source of protein, iron, and –” jiung stops midsentence, wincing while rubbing his calf.
from across the table, keeho shoots him a pointed look.
“sorry,” jiung apologises, ears turning an alarming shade of red. “i’m really into nutritional science. and most sciences, really.”
“that’s alright.” you giggle. “i know it’s good for you, but egg yolks taste like dry concrete to me.”
“i mean, that’s valid.” he nods vigorously. “that’s like spinach for me, i can’t stand the nasty aftertaste.”
“really?” you sit up straighter. “spinach is my favourite, and it also has heaps of iron.”
a swap ensues, and the two of you make small talk over mouthfuls of food.
keeho watches until he feels the visceral need to puke at your antics. with a huge sigh, he mutters something about taking a nap before slipping away. “nerds,” he grumbles under his breath.
you know this time you might actually make it out alive if you start holding your breath and can continue to do so for some hours!

“Dad, it’s okay, I can carry it.”
Jimin’s father, Pilwoo, moves the basket farther from Jimin’s hands. “No, son. You need to preserve your hands and fingers so they can help more people in the future.” Jimin sighs, knowing he can’t win against this type of argument with his father. It was a Thursday, and Jimin had no business with the university for the rest of the week, so he decided to go home early to help his parents with the family business.
Unlike most men his age, the thoughtful son didn’t mind coming home early at all. It’s additional work for him, and he knows it can get tiring most times, but for some reason, he finds it therapeutic and it certainly helps him keep his mind off things even just for a little while.
He takes another look at the entrance of their tiny seaside restaurant, briefly going over each of the fish tanks to make sure his father got everything secured. Finding nothing else to help with outside, Jimin enters their restaurant looking for his mother.
“Mom, do you need any help back there?”
Jimin rests by the doorframe of their kitchen, watching his mother go to and fro, carrying all sorts of bowls and pots around. “Don’t worry about me darling. Mom can manage.”
“You two keep on refusing any sort of help today,” he pouts, trying to follow his mother around the kitchen in an attempt to get her attention. It works, somehow. “Why don’t you just go ahead and set the tables? We’re in for a busy day today!” Jimin gazes at their still-empty restaurant, only to see all the tables ready.
“But it’s a Thursday?”
“Oh, shush! You’ll see soon enough,” his mother, Mijeong, says as she gives him a stern look. “Go ask your father if there’s anything you can help him with.” Jimin gives up trying to get his mother to ask him for help, and with a long exhale, he heads back to the restaurant front, just in case there are customers that need attending to.
“One free bowl of our special jjampong for each table.”
Jimin reads the sign twice, then another time, wondering if he’d really read the post right. He’s standing there, eyes squinted at the post, then returning his line of vision to his parents.
While weighing a customer’s order for baby octopi, Pilwoo gives Jimin a thumbs up, one which Jimin returned with a confused look on his face. Meanwhile, Mijeong was busy persuading people to eat inside after their purchases.
Jimin wasn’t against giving out complimentary dishes, as it was their practice every once in a while on special occasions, but what truly perplexed Jimin was his parents’ choice for the day’s free dish. Their jjampongs are indubitably the best in the area (no bias there) but it’s also the most expensive one on their menu, so his parents’ decision of giving it away for today has truly perplexed him.
“I know what you’re thinking son,” Mijeong says, taking Jimin’s hand in hers. “It’s just...you know how proud I am of you, Jimin-ah.” Her voice trembles a bit as she tries to keep her emotions inside. “You are the best son any parent could have asked for and...and…” Mijeong sniffles and Jimin immediately takes her in his arms, cooing at her soothing her back. “It’s okay Mom, you don’t have to…”
“No...no, I have to say this…” Jimin eyes her as he looks down, checking his mother’s face. “I don’t know what your father and I did to deserve a son like you. We both grew up here in Busan from families of humble farmers and fishermen and you’re the first ever to finish college! And take a degree a medicine in one of the best schools in the country without even having to pay a single won.” Mijeong tries hard to hold back her tears, but she quickly wipes away a few strays that fall down her cheek.
“Awh, you guys always get emotional whenever I help at the restaurant! What are we to do if we transform this place into a hotel soon? Are your tears willing to rival Haeundae?”
Mijeong pouts at him and slaps her child on the arm jokingly. “Stop it or I won’t spare you a bowl of jjampong!”
“Even when I’m going to be the one who’ll be cooking it?” Jimin says as he follows her inside while receiving a playful glare from his father. “Don’t rile your mother up unless you want to starve for the rest of the week.”

Ringing.
That’s all you remembered after hearing those four words, the four words that changed your life.
Everything else around you was mute, blurred, and forgotten. You didn’t remember hastily packing your things, you didn’t remember your boss asking you what was wrong. You didn’t remember accepting his offer of a ride, and you didn’t remember the drive to the hospital.
Those four words bounced around in your head even as your boss asked for your brother for you. You were numb, dissociated from the goings on around you. You trailed blindly as your boss led you to sit in the waiting area, because no, you can’t see them yet. They’re in surgery. No, it doesn’t look good. I’m sorry.
The baby hadn’t even crossed your mind, too much in shock. When he did, you were on your feet and asking the head nurse. You remembered that.
“The baby wasn’t with them,” she told you. You sighed in relief before realizing you had no clue where the baby was.
Your sister-in-law’s friend came then, hysterical and with baby boy with her. He was merely two months old; they had wanted an evening to themselves.
You were rocking the baby when the doctor appeared.
They didn’t make it.
The cries of the friend rang through your ears, but you just sat there. Sat there holding the baby like it was the only raft left on a sinking ship.
Ringing.
All you could hear was ringing.
There’s been an accident.
