So I was thinking of your female dean version of House Full of Wincest and I’m curious if you’ve thought about how it would change sam’s reaction to figuring it out, if at all. Do you think it would have made him more or less likely to confront John? More or less likely to leave for Stanford/try to take Dean with him? More or less likely to start a relationship with Dean? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I have thought about it, more than once! But the trouble is that, as with all versions of FHoW, you’ve got to pick how it’s done, and of course then Sam’s reaction will change, depending.

I do kind of think that Sam would be softer with a girl!Dean -- Deanna -- than with his big brother. Deanna’s still the older sibling and she wrestles and spits and cusses and is tough, but she’s still... a girl, and I really think John would treat her differently as a result, and Sam too. I mean, starting from when Sam’s about 16 with a fresh growth spurt, he’d be strong enough to win any fight they had, and just that--that moment where he lands her on her back in a wrestling match and she gasps up at him with big-eyed surprise, her hair all a mess around her head--how could he not treat her a little differently? She’s still annoying and he rolls his eyes, but he knows then that she’s soft and breakable, and there’d be a different awareness, there.

So, if it came to finding out John was fucking her--

A few scenarios.

1. It’s been happening for a long time, since Deanna was 15 maybe, and Sam’s 17 now and angry all the time and he’s always thought Dad treated her weird but one night he wakes up at two in the morning to weird rustling sounds from the front of the trailer, which means they’re back from a hunt, and he slams open the bedroom door to complain that they woke him up but Dad’s got Deanna pressed up against the kitchenette counter with his hand between her legs and they both look at him in caught-shock, and he--he knows what he’s seeing but Deanna’s not crying, not shocked by what Dad’s doing but by being seen--and Sam freaks out and yells and leaves and when he comes back after dawn, Deanna’s alone on the couch with her eyes red and she says Sammy it’s not what you think, and Sam looks at her and thinks, this is what my family is, and he leaves right then, not waiting for the college applications to get back.

2. But then again maybe it’s not that dramatic. Maybe it’s just a little nagging suspicion in Sam’s chest. How they are. How Deanna’s eyes follow Dad when he’s home. He might not want to think about what else it’d mean, but when it comes time for him to go he asks her, seriously. Come with. Because he loves her and he knows this life is terrible and she shouldn’t live like this, shouldn’t let Dad run her life like this, but she looks at him kind of exasperated and helpless and says, what would Dad do without me? He leaves but he texts her, checks in, and maybe in his sophomore year he calls a little drunk and says how’s living the dream?, kind of mean, and she’s silent on the end of the line and then says, shut up, Sammy, and the call goes dead, and Sam doesn’t talk to her after that for two years.

3. Later--when Dad’s gone--and when Dad’s gone, and the world’s a lot scarier--she doesn’t cry, much. She’s hollow instead. He’s careful with her and she doesn’t want that, but when they fight she just gets bitter and smiles more bitter and he doesn’t know what to do with that, either. She’s beautiful and always has been but right now she feels like broken glass all the time and he wants to hold her, wants to make it better even if it doesn’t feel like there’s a better to get to. He says, finally, I miss him too, and she snorts in an ugly way and they get drunk, after that, and when Sam puts his hand in her hair she tips into him and grips his shirt and shudders when his stubble scratches her face, and she says kiss me in a weird fierce way and then he does, of course, because it’s the only thing she’s wanted, since--and afterward when she’s pale in the curve of his arm she ducks her head under his chin and says I miss him too, sleepy and like she doesn’t mean Sam to hear, and Sam grips her shoulder and wonders, wonders.
