Could you comment on the following with a favorite reference or personal anecdote ?
I'm working on the heart of my research and writing now about social justice and education/schools:What if "restorative justice" was applied to our schools? That teachers develop a system of “restorative learning” so that teachers could actually find a balance within their classrooms that advocated for a students voice and curiosity? Restoring each students liberty in learning ? Cooperative? Consensual? Collaborative? Of course you can tell me to shut the fuck up with my idealist shit 🙏🙏😜😜

I might add, as I’m sitting here in my nice secure suburban illusion, that I’m thinking about the complexity of all of our lives ... “sonder”... (my 15 yr old daughter taught me this word 3 years ago http://www.dictionaryofobscuresorrows.com/post/23536922667/sonder) ... and that my attempt at a teacher “opus” is a little bit Studs Terkel and little bit Sol Alinsky fantasy. My view of being a “radical teacher,” in my affluent high school, was always about waking people up in Naperville to social justice issues. My personal financial security and social status was secure so how radical could I really be without sacrifice? ... so ... with that said, I’ve got to write like I’m clearing out some insane sewage backup created in an obscure corner of a dominant culture that prefers conformity and consumption, tolerates an occasional gadfly, and simply spits us out when revolutionary sentiment is to close to the truth.

“I can’t tell you how much it breaks my heart to hear our kids say, “school is boring, history doesn’t matter, this homework is busywork, my teacher doesn’t care ... I know their adolescence minds are challenging the system and will adapt, but they have greater access to info and tech... they get it ... and I’m not blaming them or the teachers, because they’re all overwhelmed like every generation...but reform is stagnant and change doesn’t happen without challenging the very essence of any rotting institution.”
So please! Listen! Stop herding young minds into pens and fencing them off from the real issues... they’re the ones who’ll have to contend with shitshow we’re leaving behind! Give them tools to help them help solve and work together!

Office hours today include 3 CPS school observations in Chicago’s historic south side neighborhoods, having lunch made by a 94 yr old who has lived in this building since 1921, in Packingtown, in the last pub remaining from Whisky row... everyday is an exploration of the past and future... we just live in between!
