In My Feelings Review
In My Feelings, Boozie Badazz Genre: Hip hop, 1-1-16 Travis Breese, beachandtmusic
Louisiana rapper Boozie Badazz recently rewarded his fans with In My Feelings to ring in the new year. Since the release of Touch Down 2 Cause Hell Boozie successfully beat cancer and this project, appropriately, centers around his strife with the deadly disease. His aggressive and nasally sound is one that deters many listeners; but is one that I am beginning to get accustomed to so I visited this album since 2016 seems to have the makings of a lackluster year.
After the intro track, Badazz addresses his diagnosis of cancer on the cut “Cancer.” The song contains an instrumental that is intended to appear epic, and invigorating but barely misses. The hook, “Tell me god how I get cancer,” makes the audience pity Boozie and not look up to him as the role model that he has became since his victory. It’s very possible though that as the second track he intended to do gain pity to give a later track more gravity. This hypothesis proved true when I found said later track on the cut “Call of Duty.” The highlight of the record delivers with a classy instrumental that bursts its bass punctually at the hook. Boozie’s lyrics touch on his responsibilities as a father and son that don’t get put on hold while he deals with his cancer. “Smile to Keep from Crying” is next on the track list and elaborates further on this theme while experimenting with a fun beat that is by far the most advanced and interesting of the project.
This project had good intentions but didn’t utilize the substance enough to carry an entire album. The seven other songs that I chose to not mention were overrun by garage band instrumentals and childish subject matter that didn’t jell with any of they surrounding cuts. I think this was a good release for Boozie though as this time in his life ought to be documented but he could have done a lot more with it.
5.5/10
