ALL of the "Domestic Life" questions for Estela and Taylor!
Yeeaaahh!!! Gladly....
If they get married, who proposes? The first time, on the morning of Niala'rei, Estela, but it's Taylor who pops the question a few years later when they get engaged to make it 'officially official'.
Whatâs the wedding like? Who attends? They have a small ceremony in San Trobida, officiated by Raj of all people. The hotel they use as a venue was one of the first projects of Catalyst International after its transition from Rourke's leadership; aimed at helping put the recovering country back on the tourist map. Not many people attend; just the other Catalysts (with Varyyn, Iris, and baby Reggie!), and Estela's tio. It's obviously necessary to be extremely discreet where certain members of the party are concerned, so it's kept a small and intimate affair, with great efforts gone to to keep Varyyn's identity protected.
How many kids do they have, if any? What are they like? One daughter (Liv), and they pretty much adopt their daughter's spouse (Jeimy). Later, three grandkids (Sol, Andromeda and Beatriz), then seven great-grandkids (Avis, Danilo and Carmela from Sol; Esta from Andi; and Corazon, Ariel, and Lucia from Bea). Taylor is also the surrogate for Jake and Sean's son, Michael, but is not considered a 'mother' to him. Liv is energetic, bold, and strong-willed, but also shy and prone to social and emotional stress.
Do they have any pets? They sure do! Their first is the colour-changing cat, Madam Mierdita, whom Estela obtained from Seraxa as a Valentine's gift for Taylor. Next is Taylor's scruffy little mutt, Fenix, found wandering injured around the streets surrounding Nicolas' home. They bring home another dog, Robin, when Liv is five, and acquire four horses, including Miel, an old friend of Estela's, when Liv is twelve. And some chickens, and no doubt many, many more pets in the future.
Whoâs the stricter parent? It depends on the context. Estela is more relaxed about most rules, but she is also considerably more protective where danger is perceived. Which brings us to...
Who worries the most? Estela. It's hard for her to trust that life isn't going to blow up in her face. Taylor is pretty optimistic.
Who kills the bugs in the house? They respectfully remove them and put them alive and kicking back outdoors. Unless it's a mosquito... in which case, Estela's aim is deadly.
How do they celebrate holidays? Together. Always. <3
Whoâs more likely to convince the other to come back to sleep in the morning? Estela. Taylor's pretty much a push-over in this regard, but once Estela's up, she's probably already out on a morning run or hike.
Whoâs the better cook? Estela; her cooking is pretty simple, but what she does she does well. When her tio was busy with the war effort, she cooked for them both, so it's second nature by the time Taylor comes along. Taylor's a bit crap. Points for effort, though. Admittedly, she does get better over time, but Raj's cooking skills were one of her friends' strengths that never really did rub off on her.
Who likes to dance? Taylor. And she loves the smile she can put on Estela's face when she does. When Estela does dance, it's with Taylor. And it's pretty freaking cute.
Summary: Set at the beginning of Book 2. In the wake of the Vaanti's attack on The Celestial, everything has changed. And Taylor might just have found what she needs to somehow make it through. Here's Part Two!
It was just so much to catch up with. Some twenty-four hours ago⌠well, what was to Taylor twenty-four hours ago, Diego had been there with her, most definitely alive. And Taylor had not had sex with Estela Montoya.
The image in Taylorâs head of the look on her best friendâs face if he was here to be given that update made her ache. If not for him, she never would have had the guts to make a move in the first placeâŚ.
And then another image, hard and intrusive, of something that had come to pass. It must have done, for the necklace had still been there in Taylorâs handâŚ. Estela bleeding out, her fierce eyes turning soft with tenderness, then losing their light. Taylor couldnât shake the tingling feeling of blood on her hands, nor could she get over the intensity of her anguish in that horrifying moment. Sheâd known Estela for so little time, but the connection had meant something to her; the agony of the wound when that connection had been torn from her made that quite clear.
Tears sprung to Taylorâs eyes. She couldnât let Diego be dead. She couldnât feel that raw pain of loss again⌠not Diego. She squeezed her eyes tight and focused on her breath. Sheâd coached Diego through enough panic attacks to know what to do. Slowly, purposefully, in and out. Better.
She needed to find Estela. To talk to her. Taylor had noticed Estela had slipped downstairs slightly after everyone else regrouped. God, sheâd looked haunted. It was small wonderâŚ. There was no question of Estela being okay, not when sheâd just come face to face with the man whoâd murdered her mother, but Taylor wanted to be there for her⌠to offer something, even if just to make sure Estela knew she wasnât alone as she surely felt. More selfishly, Taylor longed for that strong, capable presence. Something that would keep herself from falling apart when she couldnât stop seeing Diegoâs face as he let her hand goâŚ.
Why, oh, why didnât she stop him? She could have let go of Estelaâs hand, let herself be taken too. What kind of a friend would just let him be taken?
No. She couldnât wallow. Not while there was still a chance. Sheâd let her best friend down once, and she wouldnât let it happen again.
So, Taylor retreated to her suite to freshen up.
She couldnât help but see Diego everywhere; guilt, she was sure. Then as she tiptoed around the glass on the floor, she found herself back down there⌠Estela bleeding to death in her arms. It was no damn wonder her head was spinning-- even by La Huerta standards, what had gone down was a fucking roller coaster, and it was only just now the dust had settled enough for her to process it.
Deep breaths. In⌠and out.
Taylor splashed water on her face, and found the simple act did a lot to make her feel more herself, more stable. After a full strip-down and wash, she was more in control, and bristling with determination. Sheâd fix this. Resolutely, she told herself that if the Watchers wanted the whole group captured, then keeping their hostage alive would have been there best bet. Diego was alive out there-- he had to be-- and Taylor was coming for him. And she had Estela on her side. Estela, whoâd survived the jungles alone for days, whoâd saved Taylor from succumbing from snakebite, whoâd taken down that monster crab by her side, whoâd taught her to fightâŚ. All of them were together in this now, but no one else made Taylor feel so indomitable.
She picked out a new outfit, finding herself wanting to make an impression on Estela. It was silly, sure, but even through all the turmoil, that stupid giddy excitement of new romance couldnât be stoppered.
Taylorâs eye lingered over her old favourite âCrown and the Flameâ shirt, but it was just too painful a reminder of Diego, of all the binge sessions theyâd shared huddled up under blankets in his college apartment. Of the way heâd teased her when she got all het up over the fact that Dom was clearly not badass enough for Sei, that Sei shouldâve ended up with Kenna. And then Diego would bemoan the lack of development of Domâs scraps of a romance with Jackson. And the two of them would inevitably conclude that same-sex pairings always got the raw deal. Taylor wondered if Estela had ever seen âThe Crown and the Flameâ⌠whether it ever even aired in San Trobida. There was so much about Estelaâs life that she didnât have the first clue ofâŚ.
She settled on a nice pale blue top to go with her Hartfeld jacket. School solidarity and all that. At least it didnât give her a stabbing pain in her chest to see it in the mirror. Next; to find Estela.

When she got down to the atrium, it appeared everyone was still scattered, looking for clues. Only Grace and Aleister remained down there.
âHey, have either of you seen--?â But she was cut off.
âHeavens, tell me youâre not seeking out that maniac?â Aleister cried, aghast. âI thought you had a modicum of sense about you at least--â
âIâm looking for Estela, if thatâs what you mean,â Taylor retorted. She turned hopefully to Grace, surely she wouldnât be so fast to turn against one of their ownâŚ.
âTaylor, I really think you should be careful.â
Taylor's heart sank. Even after everything, Estela was still on the outer. The group had become tighter while sheâd been away-- no small thanks to Raj-- and even when she had been around, Estelaâs focus had been elsewhere. It was only since coming back from the observatoryâŚ. But shouldnât that have been enough? So, she was aloof, but she was clearly a friend. Or at least⌠it was clear to Taylor.
âCome on, guys!â she snapped. âEstelaâs our friend. Sheâs saved my hide several times over, and I know Iâm not the only one who can say that.â
Grace looked ashamed, and Taylor knew she'd at least reached her, even if Aleister was a harder sell. âYouâre right, Taylor. I certainly owe her my life. I guess Iâm just shocked⌠what she did to Mr RourkeâŚ.â
Fair enough, honestly. But if they knew the half it, how could they blame her? âI know it was a lot, but she had her reasons. She doesnât suddenly stop being the person whoâs had our backs all this time.â
âAre we to pretend we didnât see her file?" Aleister blustered, unmoved. "âDo Not Approachâ? I donât see eye-to-eye with my father on a great many things, but I might just have to give him that one.â
Taylor felt herself bristle. The anguish sheâd seen in Estelaâs face when Rourke looked her in the face and spoke to herâŚ. Estela wasnât the true danger here. âA broken nose is the least he deserves.â
âI despise the man myself, and you donât see me trying to kick his face in! The womanâs unhinged.â
âAl! I donât think thatâs fair. We donât know much about Estela, but sheâs always struck me as very level-headed; she must have had a good reason to respond so violently.â
If you only knew. It was Estelaâs business, and there was not a chance in hell Taylor would divulge a thing. All the same, she could have kissed Grace. It wasnât as if Aleister would truly listen to anyone else.
âThanks, Grace,â Taylor said, keeping a lid on her frustration. The last thing they needed when Diegoâs life was on the line was fractures within the group. âIf thereâs any hope at all of bringing Diego back alive, weâve gotta pull together more than ever. We canât just go out into the jungle not trusting one another-- itâd be a death sentence. And weâre not losing anyone else.â

Frustrated, she carried on through to the lobby, where she ran into Quinn, headed for the beach.
âIâm guessing youâre looking for Estela? I think she was headed to the security office.â
A little taken aback, Taylor felt herself flushing. Of course Quinn had noticed her taking Estela up to her room the night before. For all the playful flirtations-- even a couple of chaste kisses-- she and Quinn had shared during the first few days on the island, she might have expected to hear bitterness⌠but Quinn just didnât seem capable of that. It made Taylor feel worse.
âThanks! Sheâs really not the easiest person in the world to keep track of.â
Quinn chuckled. âIâll say! But it seems like youâre managing to get to know her just fine.â
Oof. âGetting to know her is worth the effort,â Taylor admitted, âI just hope everyone else will give her that chance. But, now Iâve run into you-- how are you doing? That was a pretty serious nosebleedâŚ.â
âGod, Taylor, youâre as bad as Michelle!â
Double oof. Taylor brought her hand to her heart, feigning injury, and to her relief, Quinn laughed.
âIt was just a bloody nose,â Quinn assured. âI know that youâre worried, and I appreciate that you care, but⌠itâs so much more important that everyone focuses on rescuing Diego. Just, trust me, okay? Itâs not worth worrying about.â
Taylor couldnât argue. Quinn had drawn the line, and there was no crossing it. âOkay. No more worrying. May I interest you in a hug, though?â
âOh, Taylor! Always!â
In Taylorâs arms, Quinn felt different than before. Her pale, freckled arms felt weak around her shoulders⌠her skin was clammy. Just a bloody noseâŚ? But when Taylor remembered everything theyâd gone through, surely it wasnât that strange for someone to come out of it all feeling ill? Maybe it was just anxiety?
âItâs fine, you know,â Quinn said as they came apart. âIâm fine, about you and Estela.â
There was that goddamn blushing again.
âIt⌠happened really suddenly,â was all Taylor knew to say. âI guess after the mission to the observatory, something was just⌠there.â
âI noticed. Once you got back, something was different. It really is okay; we always said we were just having some fun, taking each day as it came. You maybe finding something more serious doesnât take away what weâve shared.â
âNo. I wouldnât want it to. I donât know how Iâd have coped with all this crazy, and all those clashing personalities if I hadnât had you somehow making everything better. Youâre pretty amazing, Quinn.â
She cared about Quinn so much. She loved her. But it was so different. It wasnât the stirring in her soul that she felt when her eyes locked with Estelaâs⌠that deep knowing that went right to her bones. And none of that made the bond sheâd forged with Quinn matter any less.
âEstela seems like she needs someone⌠and if that person is you, well, that makes her really very lucky.â Quinn smiled at Taylor, and it was genuine, even as a touch of sadness lingered behind her eyes. âIt doesnât stop you from being special to me.â
âAnd it doesnât stop you from being special to me.â
Taylor hugged Quinn again, tighter. Donât you dare not be okayâŚ. Not now.
They really had to get their asses into gear. It was only a matter of time before the Watchers returned here for them⌠and however Quinn might deny it, Taylor knew she was vulnerable. And it was terrifying.
She headed down to the security office. If anyone could give her some sense of direction, it would be Estela. It didnât matter, not a damn bit, what anyone else felt; Taylor knew it deep in her bones⌠that there was not a single person in this resort whom she trusted more.
________________________________
Grinding her hips up against Estelaâs, Taylor couldnât hold back a moan, swallowed in an instant by another searing kiss. Estelaâs body held her down in the office chair, her hands roamed her body as if she could not feel enough of her. And Taylor was kissing her⌠kissing herâŚ.
âI absolutely cannot stand being helpless. Thatâs just something youâve gotta know about me.â
âIâm here for you, Estela.â
âYouâre the one who makes me feel helpless, Taylor. Around you, I canât control how I feel. Not after last night. But⌠but you made me think that maybe, just maybe, it wouldnât be the worst thing in the world⌠to be helpless with you.â
âThen be helpless with me.â
What the hell was happening on this island, Taylor couldnât have a clue, but she had certainty in this. She and Estela were facing it all together. Diego would be safe because right now, with Estelaâs hands on her, lips pressed hard against her own in frantic kisses one after another⌠Taylor was totally unstoppable. Not a damn thing could stand in her way when she felt like this.
âHey! You guys are gonna wanna see this!â
The sound of Zahraâs voice had Estela jump up as if zapped with an electric shock. She paced around the small room, eyes wild.
âYou okay?â
Estela was panting. âSorry. I just gotta⌠calm down or something. Jesus, you get me riled up.â
âLetâs go see what Zahra found. We can pick this up later.â
A smile came to Estelaâs face-- the first Taylor had seen there since they were together in the honeymoon suite, tangled up in bed.
âIs that a promise?â
How could Taylor not grin back? âYou bet it is.â
Taylor got herself to her feet, finding quickly that her legs had gone to jelly. Dammit, girl. Youâre gonna have to pull yourself together. âHelplessâ? Turned out, Estela had a point there. But it wasnât the worst thing⌠in fact, it was rather wonderful.
Then Estela grasped her hand, tight.
âTaylor.â She spoke urgently. âI canât leave Rourke living. I froze up before⌠but it changes nothing. I have to do this.â
âI know.â
Estela nodded meaningfully, her serious gaze never leaving Taylorâs face. âIf he has information that could bring Diego back safe, Iâll hold back-- for now. I want you to know that. He means a lot to youâŚ.â
âEverything. It terrifies me to think what he might be going through-- if heâs even still alive. I shouldâve let myself be taken with him-- I shouldâveâŚ.â
Taylor found herself wrapped in a hug, so gentle and tender. Estela cradled her face, kissed her forehead. And in her eyes⌠the tragic understanding of someone who knew that terror all too well.
âIâll do everything I can,â Estela said simply, and she kissed Taylor once more, this time finding her lips. âCome on. Hopefully Zahraâs onto something.â
