Beep beep the bus just drove over the curb. Thank you for the request hun. I had so much fun writing these idiots who clearly donât know shit about feelings. Enjoy!
AU: Roommates
Trope: Exes
Quote: âI think I would rather eat expired spam.âÂ
Aâwhora pushes the pedal of her sewing machine back just a nudge and stretches out her legs. She rolls the last couple stitches back and forth, then cuts the threads unceremoniously, resigning herself to completing the project sometime in the early morning, after some food and some beauty sleep. It wasnât as though she was going to sleep much tonight anyway.Â
She rolls her shoulders, easing the tightness gathering there and trailing down her lower back, pulling herself to her feet. As much as she loves the chair her and Tayce drunkenly rescued from the curb many months ago, hauled four flights up their cramped stairwell and shoved into Aâwhoraâs office, the air light and crisp and giggling along with them; as much as she loved drinking Tesco chard, the bottle passed between them as she taught Tayce how to sew patches of scrap fabric into the chair to hold the bursting stuffing back, bandaging and sloppily kissing many a pricked finger, it still hurts after a while. It always does.Â
So Awhora throws back the last of her cuppa and heads down the hallway, stopping at the smoke detector flush against the wall, getting on her tip-toes, tapping a cotted finger against the button until it gives a firm beep. She doesnât want the apartment to burn down, partially because she couldnât bear to see a dress sheâs already put twenty hours of work into to go up in flames, partially because she doesnât want a reason for the lease to break early, partially because fire kills people.
âWhatâs with all the candles?â Aâwhora asks, slipping the cot off of her finger and into the bin. She asks, though she already knows. Itâs not as though Tayce has changed much, and Tayce was always one to set a scene for date nights, so the candles and stemless wine glasses arenât out of place. She doesnât give Tayce the chance to answer, choosing to jab at her instead. âLavender doesnât cover the smell of burnt rubber, babes.âÂ
Tayce rolls her eyes in return, still stirring frantically at the pot in front of her. âYouâre not helpful, Whora,â she drawls, now jabbing at whatever's in that wretched pot with the back end of the wooden spoon, red sauce splattering across the stovetop, sticking in Tayceâs brow. âFuck.âÂ
Awhora rounds the counter, grabbing at Tayceâs arm. âSlow down, Hannibal,â she chases with a laugh, taking the spoon from Tayce to stop the violent prodding and stop herself from wiping the sauce out of her brow. âBack it up and tell me what weâre doing here.âÂ
âWhat I think Iâm doing here is massacring a piece of chicken until itâs cooked.â Tayce takes the spoon back, giving it a once over before tossing it into the already full sink.Â
âWellâŠâ Aâwhora grabs a fork and bumps Tayceâs hip away from the stove. âFor starters, turn the burner off.â She brushes the pasta and sauce away from the chicken, holds it up in front of her face, and gives it a good once over. âAnd surprise...itâs burnt.â She then sticks it in Tayceâs face, watching intently as her eyes cross in front of the blackened chicken.
If Tayceâs bemused sighâas though she didnât know food could be overcookedâdoesnât do her in, then her pursed, plump lips surely do, like sheâs brainstorming ways to unburn the chicken, or better yet, ways to have Aâwhora fix it like she always did, well, still does.Â
âJust try it to be sure, yeah?âÂ
Aâwhora wrinkles her nose, returning the chicken to the pot and poking at it like it might grow legs and get on up. âI think Iâd rather eat Spam, bloody canned meat, than this.âÂ
âAt least this isnât bloody, innit?âÂ
Aâwhora gives a playful shove. âYouâre stupid,â she says, though she knowâs sheâs endeared by how quick Tayce thinks she is, how she jokes even when sheâs fucked up, how Aâwhora wished she could do the same. She dodges Tayceâs return shove to grab the bin, nearly spilling over, and drags it to the stove. âYou put the chicken in raw, or you cooked it first?âÂ
âYou just put it in, let it cook with everything else, of course,â Tayce replies easily. âSo we just take the chicken out and itâs a lovely Italian meal. I say Iâm going vegetarian and sheâs taken by my love of animals...âÂ
âYou got to bin the whole thing.â Aâwhora interrupts, making a move for the pot, but Tayce grabs her wrist.Â
âJust try some of the pasta. Maybe thatâs done right.âÂ
âItâs not. Itâs gonna give me food poisoning, babe.â Aâwhora knows itâs a touch blunt for the woman she knows can barely heat beans from a can, but is clearly trying, and that adding âbabeâ does nothing to soften it. Sheâd like to blame the feeling of Tayceâs slender fingers wrapped around her wrist on her snappishness, but she knows that makes her melt beyond her control if anything.Â
Tayce scrapes the pot, muttering to the pasta âSuppose she thinks sheâs a chef now. Right Gordon Ramsey but canât make much more than a bowl of shreddies.âÂ
Aâwhora should be offended, but itâs true. And itâs Tayce.Â
âI donât know what to do, but I know what not to do, at least.â She clears her throat and tries again, releasing her wrist and holding out her hand for the fork. Tayce obliges. âYou canât put raw meat in cooked food. The chickenâs got germs and youâre overcooking the pasta and youâre boiling down the sauce to a paste.â She tries scraping a mushy noodle from the side of the pan. âThatâs three reasons why Iâd rather eat expired Spam, with my freshly manicured fingers, than try this, love.â
âLittle old me got an upgrade to the fingers, huh.â After Tayceâs smirk falls into an indignant huff, she steals the fork back. âLucky itâs not for you, dear.â She picks out the chicken and flicks it into the bin.Â
âIâm just saying, youâre not getting fucked after feeding her that.â Aâwhora grabs the paper towel roll and wipes down the counter as best she can, knowing itâs going to need a good scrub later. From the sauce, of course.
Setting the fork down, Tayce tilts her head toward Aâwhora. âThatâs not really your problem anymore,â she says, and Aâwhora almost thinks sheâs imagining the lilting, coy tone, though sheâs sure sheâs not imagining the lightheadedness that comes along with it.
She swallows. âWell, I still genuinely care about you and your pussy, so I suggest you toss that in the bin and grab some takeaway.â She makes her way to the living room, tugging on a pair of boots before grabbing her wallet and phone off the coffee table.Â
âAnd if you call in enough time, I might still be out to grab it for you.â Aâwhora grabs Tayceâs leather jacket off the hookâitâs the only one out here, and sheâs not sure if sheâs just too lazy to grab her own, or wants to send a message to whatever womanâs coming overâand shrugs it on, stuffing her hands in the pockets. âAnd if Iâm still out, I might actually grab it for you.â She flashes a slick smile, nodding only once Tayce concedes and begins spooning the pasta into the bin.Â
âThatâs a love,â Aâwhora taunts, waving her phone a bit. âLet me know about the takeaway.âÂ
âBitch,â Tayce mutters through a soft grin.Â
Aâwhora opens the door, and says, into the falling night, âyours,â before heading out and locking up behind her.

âYou cunt! Whyâd you blue shell me!â Aâwhora huffed, placing her controller on the table before directing her attention to Tayce.Â
âYou hit me first, you little hound! I swear, it was like four red shells!âÂ
âYeah, but you were ahead of me,â Aâwhora whined, her frown beginning to form into a pout as Tayce stared at her with a raised eyebrow.
âYou were first, not my fault.â
Aâwhora was cute when she was angry. Video games lit up her competitive streak more than anything, leading her to pout and whine whenever she was beaten. Her complaints were currently directed at Tayce, whoâd narrowly beaten her in the last race. Bimini watched them with a bemused grin, the more tayce tried to calm her, the more Aâwhora pouted.
Tayce tried to hold back her amusement, though seeing Aâwhora turn away from her with an exaggerated huff made her break character, wrapping an arm around her shoulders with a laugh. The blonde squeaked as she was pulled in, quickly wrapping her arms around Tayce and leaning her head on her shoulder.
âYou got lucky,â she murmured into Tayceâs chest, curling into her arms further around her waist as the taller girl ruffled her hair.
âYouâre so competitive, just accept you lost, you little idiot.â
âCan you two stop flirting and move so we can do the next race?â Lawrence shook her head, turning to Ellie to mutter something into her ear. The taller woman snickered, catching the attention of the pair, quietly separating before going back to playing.
Tayce shook it off, remarks like that werenât something that bothered her. Their relationship wasnât like that, she didnât like girls, and Aâwhora was like a sister to her.Â
So why did her heart beat faster at the blush on the blondeâs face, why did she need to watch her flusteredly trying to play it off and failing miserably?
Sheâd always thought Aâwhora was cute, anyone with eyes would have. Something about her drew Tayce in the moment they met; the way she pouted when anything slightly didnât go her way, how she laughed at her own jokes, the way her eyes lit up when Tayce laughed at something she said, her dimples showing as she grinned.Â
She could admire the beauty of her friend without it meaning anything, right?Â
âTayce! The game is starting!â
Tayce snapped her attention back to a giggling Aâwhora, gesturing to the screen with a shake of her head.Â
Fuck, the game. Why did she agree to play again? Ellie had subbed out for Bimini, the five of them somehow making the four player game work. Tayce tried to shake her thoughts, focusing on beating Aâwhora, hearing her whine about Tayce cheating one more time, both of them knowing she was better at the game but not wanting to say it.Â
---
Tayce spent the rest of the time trying to act cool. No one seemed to notice anything off, too attentive on the game and the comments that the loser would always drop, denying a lack of skill and saying it was the game.Â
Bimini was too caught up texting their girlfriend to try and swap in to play, it slightly irked Tayce to see people happy in a relationship. Though sheâd never say it, it stung knowing she lacked something to get that from anyone. Everything she tried failed, what was she lacking that everyone else seemed to have?Â
The more she pondered it she became away from the ongoing tension with Lawrence and Ellie. It was clear something was going to happen soon. The way their attention went to each other instantly.Â
They had each other, the idiots just didnât realise it quite yet.Â
Aâwhora was the only one like her, though she never understood why. She was perfect, sweet, but not afraid to stand up for herself. She was funny, quick witted to a scary extent. She always knew the right thing to say to get Tayce bursting into laughter, though her insults would sting like nothing else, she always knew where to strike. Not too bad to turn people on her, but harsh enough to shake up the person it was directed at.Â
The blonde caught onto Tayceâs introspection, quietly moving to grab her hand and making the brunette jump in the process.Â
âYouâre thinking too hard again, arenât you?â Aâwhora titled her head as Tayce turned away, denial. Great.Â
âIâm fine, I'm just bored,â she muttered out a response, knowing neither of them believed it, but attempting it anyway. Aâwhora saw straight though her, grumbling at the lack of proper response before moving closer to her. Her arms found their way around her waist soon after and Tayce had to fight the dopey smile coming to her face from the affection.
âDonât let them get to you, youâll find the right person, it just takes time. I havenât, have I? Youâre not alone.â Her tone turned softer, whispering so only Tayce would hear her.Â
âYeah, thanks Rory.â Tayce gave a small, genuine smile, wrapping her arms around her waist back to pull her into another hug with the attention off of them for the time being.Â
âIâm still better at mario kart than you, though,â Tayce giggled at the exaggerated pout on Aâwhoraâs lips at the quip.Â
She knew she messed up the moment, but it felt too good to see Aâwhora giggling, her dimple showing enough to make anyone squeal in how adorable she was.Â
âWeâve won a similar amount of games! Donât discount me there, lass!â
Tayce just shrugged, holding back her laugh at the pout on Aâwhoraâs face, turning her attention around them to see Bimini looking at them with a raised eyebrow, their eyes flickering back to their phone briefly before continuing to watch them in interest.Â
Ellie and Lawrence were thankfully too distracted in playfully insulting each other; it made Aâwhora and her look tame in comparison to how much they unwittingly flirted. At least it kept the attention off of them, Tayce gestured to whatever they were up to, and Bimini let out a laugh at the mess of them just before figuring out their feelings were mutual.Â
The games kept going, keeping the thoughts away for that much longer. She was acutely aware of how Aâwhora started to lean against her, grumbling when Tayce attempted to move. She huffed more at losses, not deflecting it with jokes as she had been an hour before. Everyone had started to quieten down now, Aâwhora just happened to be more grouchy than the others the more time passed.Â
It wound down as Bimini announced the last game, Aâwhora having given up playing a while ago to lean against Tayce and mindlessly scroll through her phone. Someone commented on her being suddenly antisocial, to which she just grumbled and turned to Tayce for defence.
âSheâs just grumpy cause sheâs tired, donât mind her,â Tayce quipped, getting a laugh from their friends as Aâwhora groaned next to her.
âOh fuck off, youâre supposed to stick up for me.â
âYouâre like a child whoâs up past their bedtime,â Tayce deadpanned, Aâwhora rolling her eyes at the statement though still stayed leant against her roommate.Â
Theyâd made it home soon after. A'whora was scarily quiet, though Tayce knew it was because sheâd spent too much time with people and exhausted herself mentally. She didnât bother her, only sliding her hand over hers when they got into the uber to get home.
âAre you going to bed now?â Tayce questioned as they got in, Aâwhora turning to look at her quizzically before responding.
âNot right now, Iâm going to get into bed and go on my phone for a bit until I fall asleep.â She shrugged, voice laced with tiredness she wasnât willing to admit to.
âAlright, Iâm going to play some games until I feel tired, donât stay up too late. I know how pissy you get when you donât sleep enough.â
âI do not!â Aâwhora shook her head, laughing as Tayce shot her a look of shock at the denial. Tayceâs presence made her relax, not feeling the social exhaustion so much when she engaged in conversation.
âYou absolutely do, and donât try to deny it. You better not be up by the time I go to bed.â
âI doubt I will be, but never say never.â
They bid each other good night, Tayce turning to her room to hook up her xbox and play some more. It kept her brain occupied letting the previous thoughts wash away. She didnât know what had come over her, but it was something sheâd shake off soon enough. It took an hour of online playing for her to start to feel the fatigue, turning it off and stretching before going to move to her bed.
She remembered Aâwhora, wondering if she was still awake. It was getting late, and if she wasnât asleep by now then tomorrow would be a long day. Curiously, she went to check, poking her head round her door to see a sleeping Aâwhora with her phone on her chest.
Of course the idiot forgot to put it on charge. Tayce laughed silently, moving to put it on charge to avoid the complaints sheâd hear the next morning.
Tayce felt her eyes linger on her asleep roommate. She knew it was weird to look at her sleeping, but she looked so peaceful, curled up in her duvet with her face half buried in her pillows. She was adorable while awake, this felt like something she shouldnât get to see, Aâwhora fully relaxed and cozy in her bed.
The brunette left soon after, confused about the lingering image of how adorable Aâwhora was in her brain. The warmth in her chest prevailed as she started to fall asleep, something in her wishing she could hold Aâwhora as she slept. Be close to her when she was that relaxed and vulnerable.
She couldnât think too hard on it before she was asleep, only hoping whatever was going on would pass within a few days.
She never looked at Aâwhora like that, why would she start now?Â
