Tavener’s Song for Athene was originally written in memory of a friend of the composer and was later sung at the funeral service of Diana, Princess of Wales, in Westminster Abbey. The text comes from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and from the Orthodox funeral service.
Alleluia
May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
Alleluia
Remember me, O Lord, when you come into your kingdom.

Tavener - The Lamb
William Blake’s most popular collection, The Songs of Innocence and Experience, uses more simplistic language to work through complex subjects. One of his most popular poems, The Lamb, comes from a child narrator teaching a lamb about Christianity. Inspiration from Christianity [specifically Orthodoxy later in life] was important to John Tavener’s work. Here, he takes the “cute” poem and imbues it in a serious liturgical manner, calling back to medieval church chant.
Little lamb, who made thee  Dost thou know who made thee, Gave thee life, and bid thee feed By the stream and o’er the mead; Gave thee clothing of delight, Softest clothing, woolly, bright; Gave thee such a tender voice, Making all the vales rejoice?  Little lamb, who made thee?  Dost thou know who made thee?  Little lamb, I’ll tell thee;  Little lamb, I’ll tell thee: He is callèd by thy name, For He calls Himself a Lamb. He is meek, and He is mild, He became a little child. I a child, and thou a lamb, We are callèd by His name.  Little lamb, God bless thee!  Little lamb, God bless thee!
