The Danger of Black Henna Tattoos: A Cautionary Tale from Bali
An Australian mother has issued a warning to travelers about the hidden dangers of black henna tattoos after her nine-year-old daughter suffered a severe allergic reaction, leading to scarring. Kaitlyn Salter from Melbourne shared her experience, highlighting the risks of getting a tattoo in Bali in a shop that didn't prioritize safety and hygiene.
During a visit to Kuta beach, Salter's daughter, Imogen, opted for a temporary henna tattoo. Initially, Imogen chose a turtle design, but another artist persuaded her to switch to a wolf design. The second artist began drawing the new design without warning, setting off a chain of events that turned a fun holiday activity into a nightmare.
Two days later, Imogen's arm blistered and became painful. Despite applying antiseptic cream and later using antibiotics and antihistamines, her condition worsened. The reaction resulted in a painful scar that required frequent doctor's visits and additional medication. Salter noted that the first doctor in Bali thought the reaction would clear up, but it worsened upon their return to Melbourne, necessitating stronger antibiotics and burn cream.
Salter regrets not knowing about the potential dangers of black henna tattoos. She shared their story in a Facebook group for Bali tourists, warning others about the severe allergic reactions that can occur. Her post received numerous comments from others who had experienced similar issues with black henna tattoos.
Unlike natural henna, which is typically chocolate brown or mahogany, black henna contains paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a chemical used in permanent hair dye. PPD can cause allergic reactions in up to one in five people, making it a risky choice for temporary tattoos.
Salter's story underscores the importance of being cautious when considering a tattoo in Bali. Choosing the best tattoo studio in Bali can help ensure safety and avoid harmful reactions. This cautionary tale highlights the need for awareness and careful consideration when opting for temporary henna tattoos.
