I think it would be really neat to see a production of Ragtime where Tateh is played by a young actor, like late twenties to early thirties. Seeing his optimism about America break down would be even more heartbreaking, and it would add an interesting layer to his relationship with the little girl. Not only is he a young father, he’s a young widow trying to get by in an unfamiliar country. I just think it would make sense in context and add a little complexity to his character arc.

Reading Ragtime.
For my Music Theater class, I have been tasked with reading the “Ragtime” Libretto, as I am performing a song as Mother this week with my classmate as Tateh (”Our Children”). And as I read about her character, and watch her growth as these new people come into her life, her feelings toward her husband and her children and to justice and truth and her own freedom, I am reminded of previous relationships I have been in, and how I have gone through this journey, at least, in part. I am astounded how I could have so much in common with a character who is a mother, as someone who does not want children, but feels a great deal of maternal love for various people around her. I am watching her relationship with her husband unfold and change, and I see too many similarities, I feel for her. I have been her. I have experienced her freedom, her hair loose from pins as it rains, her bare feet on the sand, her loved ones at her side, the wind whipping at her skirts and slapping against her face in a random, erratic pattern.
I have experienced her love of storms. Her awakening. Her potential.Â
I feel so powerful and connected to this woman. I am proud of this.Â

Frosty Stuttgart receives guest from the desert: Workshop with Tateh Lehbib Breica (28) engineer living in Tindouf, Algeria. Why there, lost in the hot desert sand, people try to survive since more than 40 years you finde elsewhere by terms such as Western Sahara, Tindouf. Tateh is building with the few what can be found "at home" and what people there can afford. For one of the frequent sandstorms will not tear away the zinc roof and heavy rain will not wash away the clay, he is using sand, filled in plastic bottles as bricks. The UNHCR has become aware of him and his vision. Transsolar now also supports him towards the goal: A little bit of quality of life for the people there, a stable roof over the head, less heat. He now has a collection of possible passive strategies in his pocket. We stay tuned.
