Week 13
In âGay Imperialismâ, Haritaworn, Tauqir and Erdem talk about the integration project of civilizing âhomophobic immigrantsâ (14). What is this project of integration? How does this affect LGBT Muslims, according to the authors?
The integration of âhomophobic immigrantsâ essentially involves white members of the LGBT community teaming together with white heterosexuals to spread their âexpertâ opinion on how to âfixâ the âhomophobic immigrantâ problem. Â In Germany this idea of âfixingâ supposedly âhomophobic immigrantsâ resulted in a âMuslim testâ added to the citizenship test. Â This special test asked questions about how the person desiring citizenship would respond if their child came out as gay, if they saw a gay couple in the streets, etc. Â This whole process is ridiculous and extremely Islamophobic. Not only is it ineffective, as someone applying for citizenship probably knows how to answer these questions in a way that wonât raise any suspicions, but it also assumes that Germany is entirely accepting of LGBT people which simply isnât true. Â There are a lot of people in Germany, just like there are everywhere else, who are homophobic but they get their citizenship just fine simply by being born in the country and arenât subjected to these tests of tolerance (or even frowned upon for their homophobic views in many cases; for them itâs simply âa difference of opinionâ). Â
This so called âassistanceâ for LGBT Muslims is also completely unasked for. Â Peter Tatchell, for example, took it upon himself (completely without permission or approval from LGBT Muslims) to âassistâ the âpoor, underprivileged LGBT Muslimsâ even âat the sake of his own healthâ. Â Thatâs right, Tatchell claims to work tirelessly, sacrificing his own health, to help LGBT Muslims. Â Which would be great, IF THEY WANTED HIS HELP. Â Instead, Tatchell places a golden halo of righteousness on his own head, graciously taken on the âwhite manâs burdenâ to deal with the âhomophobicâ Muslim populations around the world. Â He picks how he wants to help, ignoring what LGBT Muslims actually want (and ignoring if they actually feel that they need help). Â This serves to victimize LGBT Muslims and removes any agency that they may feel they have by negating the idea that they might actually have agency to begin with in such a âhomophobicâ climate. Â Muslim countries are automatically subjected to a single story of homophobia and violence rather than being viewed as they really are. Â
