the way Sirius was in love with James 😭😭😭😭 the way that love was turned against him by Voldemort/Peter, because his desperate need to protect James led him to trusting Peter as a double layer of defence - willingly throwing his own life away, knowing that Voldemort and his DEs would go after him, torture him for the Potters’ location, probably kill him when he wouldn’t (actively couldn’t) give the information up. the way Sirius was the one who found James’ body and wbk he blamed himself. the way his happiest memories and therefore best defence against the Dementors would all have included James (and Harry) and would therefore have become deeply painful and would, in fact, have been turned against him by the Dementors, forcing him to relive those moments, all while knowing that James was dead, all while holding himself responsible for James’ death. the way Sirius was psychologically tortured like that, every day FOR TWELVE YEARS, IN AZKABAN, until it became mentally and emotionally safer to live his life in prison as a dog, so that they couldn’t torture him quite so badly. the way this is only one part of the trauma and grief that Sirius lived through. All that, without even touching on him being imprisoned again, this time in the house where he was abused, haunted by dead relatives screaming their disgust at him. Or the fact that the only real warmth or affection he received, even then, was from Harry and Remus, neither of whom were around him very much. Or that Molly, well known for her kindness, maternal warmth, for taking in strays and taking care of them, treated Sirius with nothing but contempt.
