Friday Deep Dive: The Hermit 🌟 Here’s an old story from the first European romance novel, written in 1283 by Catalonian mystic Ramon Lull. 🌟 Blanquerna was a young man who chose to leave behind a chance at love to follow a spiritual path. As a young monk he was so dedicated and pure that he quickly rose through the ranks until he was elected Pope. He’s quickly disillusioned by the political entanglements of this role and he realizes he must once again choose between the worldly and the spiritual. With the help of a “wise fool” he leaves behind his position of power and becomes a Hermit. 🌟 Now here’s the interesting part. We think of Hermits as isolated and lonely, but actually Blanquerna finds himself in a community of hermits and they need his spiritual guidance to defeat temptation. Blanquerna writes them a book of meditations called “The Book of the Lover and the Beloved” which he says is inspired by Sufi mysticism, where the Divine is spoken about as a beloved that the lover longs to unite with. 🌟 Blanquerna was written a couple hundred years before the Tarot was created in Renaissance Italy, but obviously there are interesting overlaps between this story and the Major Arcana. 🌟 For me, it helps to re-center the Hermit card not just as a card of the internal search for wisdom, but a willingness to be a mentor. Blanquerna rejects power, and he rejects a life of marriage and wealth, but he has not abandoned people. So, when the Hermit comes up, we can ask, where can I find wisdom in unorthodox places, and how can I share what I know with those who seek to learn? How can I be brave enough to follow my own path? And How can I release my attachment to power without releasing my commitment to the wellbeing of my community? 🌟 Remember my babes, 2020 is all about how we can serve and cultivate healthy communities. Friday Deep Dive: Queen of Pentacles 🌟 Queen of Pentacles is Queen of the Autumn Harvest. She’s a well-watered garden, with fertile soil. She is cultivation - weeding and pruning in turn to nurture a bountiful but elegant home life. She is deeply connected to her inner knowing and her emotions, but her Earthiness grounds her and keeps her tethered to reality. 🌟 She is a great example of someone who can move through the various emotions that come up during the day, by moving her body in mundane activities that become sacred. She knows the peace that can be found in chopping wood, mopping floors, tending hearth fires. By giving her body to these daily tasks, she opens her intuition to receive inspiration. 🌟 There’s a reason why the Pentacles are that final suit when a deck is put in order. Once we’ve aligned our mind, our hearts, and our passions, we use our hands to manifest what’s in our souls. It’s so often treated as the most mundane suit, and in readings I often treat it as duties and responsibilities, but when considering the courts, we can really see that the ultimate expression of the Pentacles is someone building Heaven on Earth, which you could also argue is one of our dual aims when working with the tarot. The other is seeking non-dual enlightenment through the line of the Major Arcana, but even if we manage to achieve that, we still have Earthly bodies that must find a way to live well in this world, and the Queen of Pentacles in partnership with the King are beautiful models for that balance of enlightened embodiment. . . . .
