In Italian mythology, Tarantasio is a dragon who terrorised the inhabitants of Lombardy. He ate children and smashed boats. He also had foul breath, which caused yellow fever.
The dragon lived in Lake Gerundo, and many legends tell of the lake's draining and Taranasio's eventual defeat. Most attribute this to Saint Christopher, but others claim it was Frederick Barbarossa who slayed the beast. Tarantasio's tomb is said to be found on the Achilli islet.
