Tarabuco, pueblo Indigena. Chuquisaca, Bolivia.
This weekend it’s the Pujllay celebration in Tarabuco, near Sucre, Bolivia, one of the biggest celebrations in the Quechua culture! If any of you happens to be in Sucre and wants to go there tomorrow and/or on Sunday send me a message! We can take you to some communities to get a full authentic experience :)
Ahhh, Sucre. A most welcome change from Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Our flight was super quick, taking a grand total of 35 minutes. Villa Oropeza, which is a 6 minute walk from Mercado Central, is a beautiful colonial style affair with flowers, balconies and a large garden. Sucre, in general, is a very clean and well structured city with streets upon streets of hidden gems. It’s quite easy to get lost within.
On Friday, we went dirt biking through the countryside with Off Road Bolivia, an excellent company that offers lessons on motorbikes, quads and ATVs. Ian picked it up very quickly having never ridden a bike before and soon, we were flying through the trails, being chased by local dogs and riding on the edge of rocky precipices. Note to self: must upgrade my scooter when I get back. We treated ourselves to some fine French cuisine (because why the hell not?) as a toast to not dying.
If you have as much love for dinosaurs as Ian, Parque Cretacico will be right up your alley. On our way there, we saw a mini tornado. The park offers a fantastic view of over 5,000 dinosaur footprints dotted across a massive cliff face (known locally as Cal Orck'o) and is well worth a visit.
On Sundays, Tarabuco (about an hour outside Sucre) provides a sprawling textile and animal market which attracts tourists and locals alike. We ended up buying a hammock - very practical. We also witnessed traditional Tarabuceños dance during lunch. All in all, a very valuable experience within a wonderful place. Sucre, you will be missed.

I am rarely a photographer of people, but the contrast between the tourists and the indigenous people was irresistible. Unlike many folk markets, Tarabuco has not yet succumbed to the demands of the tourist trade (pace Otovalo in Ecuador or Chichicastenango in Guatemala as examples), and tourist treasures are but a tiny fraction of its offerings. Mostly it sells, often in barter transactions, commodities for local residents. The weekly market in Tarabuco is thus still breathtaking (at an elevation of 3,300 m almost literally) for the opportunity to observe the array of merchandise and the people who are its sellers and customers. A cultural anthropologist's dream!
Last weekend we celebrated the Pujllay in Tarabuco. This is one of the biggest Quechua celebration in the world and it’s part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage!
