Ava Gardner with her close friend Roddy McDowall and Ava's beloved corgi Cara in a candid photo taken on the set of the British folk horror film The Ballad of Tam Lin (aka: Tam-Lin, The Devil's Widow, and The Devil's Woman), London, August 1969. This was the only movie Roddy ever directed and he specifically chose Ava as the star, telling film critic Roger Ebert that he "wanted to make a tribute to Ava Gardner, and the movie was a gesture of love". Ava and Roddy made their only film together three years later when they were both cast in John Huston's The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean with Paul Newman, though they didn't have any shared scenes with Ava appearing at the end of the movie as actress Lillie Langtry.
