This is my submission for @flashfictionfridayofficialâs prompt Alien Sunsets.Â
I wrote the original version of this on Feb. 13, 2019, and I have updated and changed it a little.
Opportunityâs fan whirred as she swept her gaze across the alien terrain. Mars. She had called it home for these last 15 years. No longer truly alien as it was all she had ever really known, and so long she would barely remember anything about the place called Earth.Â
She knew her creators lived there - the ones that had designed her, and had crafted her with care. The ones she called her family, but only after they had explained in depth what a family meant. She hadnât understood at first. Humans could be so silly, sometimes. But as she sent them updates on what she had found, and when they had cheered and congratulated her from 54.6 million kilometers away, she thought perhaps she understood. How she missed the humans that she never got to meet.Â
A light blinked in Opportunityâs retinal scanner. A warning. Her battery - 15%. Would the humansâ rescue mission make it time?
âWeâre coming, Oppy.â Opportunityâs memory drive repeated, and the roverâs fan whirred in recognition of the human Stephenâs voice.Â
8 months. It had been 8 months since her Comm had gone offline. Well, partially offline, Opportunityâs systemâs corrected her. She could still hear the humans as they desperately tried to make contact with her. But she had no way to give them her reply.Â
âOpportunity Rover,â another one of her humans had commed, âroll forward 10 meters if you can hear us.âÂ
It had been Morgan that time, the desperation in her voice as clear as the cloudless days there on the desolate planet.
âThree of my wheels have been compromised.â The rover had tried to reply. âI cannot move at all. The debris is too much.â
âFlash your light if you can hear us, sweetheart.â Morgan had tried, months later. âFlash us a quick hello.âÂ
But how could Opportunity tell them that her front lamp had been shattered by rocks tossed in the storm that had ripped her apart all of those months ago? Each thing that they tried, the storm had taken away from her.Â
She was alone. She could hear them, but she had no way of communicating this to them.Â
The retina light blinked at her again. 10%
âMy battery is low, Stephen.â She whirred. Opportunityâs Memory Drive knew what the caring human would say if he could hear the rover.Â
âOpen your solars, sweet girl.â Stephen would say. âLet the sunâs rays recharge and rejuvenate you.âÂ
âMy Solars broke in the windstorm. Broken off and flung far away. There is no way I can reach them now.â
Opportunityâs retina flashed. 7%.
âBesides,â she continued, âit is almost sunset. There would be no sun to recharge my battery anyway.â
âOh Hon,â Morgan would say, âYou can hold on one more night. I believe in you.â
I believe in you.Â
Opportunity did not entirely understand the meaning behind the humanâs words. Believe? It was a matter of ability. Could the Rover travel that many kilometers in a day? Could Opportunity last 90 days on an inhospitable planet? Could she withstand the drastic temperatures of the night one more time?Â
You can hold on one more night. I believe in you.Â
15 years.Â
One more night.Â
At least the sunset would be pretty. Opportunity thought she liked the color blue.
5%.
If she lasted one more night, would they come for her as the sun rose?Â
I believe in you.
If she lasted one more night, would she get to meet the humans that had helped her through the years of her life?Â
4%.
Maybe if they knew she could hear them. Maybe if they knew she wasnât a lost cause - that she was stranded, but alive.Â
 3%.
Opportunityâs fans whirred, slowing down.Â
She was going to die.Â
The sun had begun to set. The sky fading from orange to blue, the shadows lengthened, darkened.Â
Yes, she liked the color blue.Â
She tried her Comm one last time. Just as always, it crackled and hissed. It probably wouldnât work, but she had to try.

âItâll be okay.â Truce patted Aaronâs neck from his place on the humanâs shoulder.Â
Aaron gave another sob and Truce clung to the ends of his hair in an attempt to steady himself.Â
âThere, there.â Truce tried, rubbing his hand up and down Aaronâs neck.Â
Aaronâs hand came up to cup the borrower gently, and Truce knew it was in thanks. His human friend was not so good with words, but chose actions over speech.Â
And thank goodness for that, Truce thought as he began to hum softly, or their friendship would never have made it past the language barrier.

Awwwww <3
I realized I never really wrote g/t friendships, only the tense parts of discovery or mistrust. I decided for the last prompt that some nice g/t kindness was much needed - even though drama is sometimes much more fun to write!Â
That is it for the Gt Prompt List of 2018! Iâm not quite sure what Iâm going to do next, but this was a fun ride! Thank you to everyone who was there with me for it! Iâm sorry it took me a year to complete them!Â
Markus tiptoed across the kitchen counter towards the sink. His goal was the cold box - he hoped there were some slivers of ham left in the top drawer.Â
His brotherâs fever was so high. Markus had spent the day mopping Westleâs head with a cold cloth, hoping to keep his temperature down. It had depleted their water supply, so Markus left his brother when the house was asleep.Â
Maybe if Markus brought meat home, Westle would keep some of it down.Â
So, I have been lurking here on Tumblr and watching other peopleâs Writerblrâs, and I have decided that itâs time I introduced myself!Â
Hi! Iâm Talya Wrehn, and I write Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Iâm 20 (almost 21. ohmyword, two weeks.) and I am in college for Chemical Engineering - which is odd, considering I love storytelling more than anything else. Itâs my backup, my day job, so I can write on the side.Â
Worldbuilding is my favorite part of writing - so, needless to say, I have many worlds and many magic systems. Have I written them down or explored them properly? Eh... not so much. I have finished a few short stories and drabbles, and finishing those felt good. But I have a High Fantasy novel in the works. It doesnât have a proper title, but its working name is Darkness Reborn.
Darkness Reborn was my NaNoWriMo project of 2019 and I won with it, writing over 50k. They were terrible, horrible words that barely scratched the surface of the world and the plot and the story that I wish to convey.Â
I want to rework all of it, the plot, the culture, the character interactions. I found new inspiration in the way to tell a story that spans Ages, and I think I am going to begin to pull and knit those threads.Â
Iâm introducing Darkness Reborn here so I can keep myself accountable. Please! Ask me how itâs going! Ask me what Iâm struggling with, who my characters are, and anything else you want! My ask box will always be open!
I will do a proper introduction of my novel in a separate post, I think. It could get quite lengthy.Â
Thank you so much for all of your words of wisdom and the support you have all unknowingly given me. I am pumped to finish the first draft of the biggest project I have ever taken on!

Markus paced back and forth in his cage as he watched the bean - James. Wrappers littered the table and clothes mimicked them on the floor. How did the human live?Â
James lived a life of luxury, Markus decided. No stockpiles of food, no worries of capture or starvation. He had never noticed it when he borrowed, but since James had captured him Markus was forced to see it all up close. It disgusted him, how lazy this human was.Â
Markus used to envy them and their access to everything.Â
But now, now he wasnât so sure.Â

An interesting take. I was reading through a friendâs gt piece the other day and they mentioned stockpiles for when humans werenât in the house. It made me think - and at the end of it, I realized that some borrowers would despise the humans for the apparent luxuries that are sometimes squandered.Â
A small gurgle made Gillian open her closed hand. On her palm rested the pretty seashell she had picked up, just a few hundred feet behind her, on her slow amble along the private beach.Â
It was white with peach splotches dotting its surface. Gillian brought her hand closer to her face, peering closer. The shell rocked in her hand. Gillian froze, breath caught in her chest.Â
The shell moved again.Â
It wasnât her doing, there was something inside the shell.Â
Was it a water snail? She prodded the shell.Â
A tiny, slimy creature slid out from within.
A mermaid?

That mermaid would by tiny. And probably really close to death. I hope Gillian had the heart to put her back in the oceanâŚ

Edana dragged the blade against the soft side of her forearm. It glinted as it moved - the full moonâs light bouncing off the white metal. She winced as scarlet drops quickly beaded along the cut and joined. A line of blood. Edana slid the blade back into its place against her thigh as red ran down her arm and dripped onto the stone floor.
Next to her, sat the vial - just as it had been for the past fortnight. Edana should have hidden it, should have tucked it away in a drawer, at least. But something always stopped her when she tried. Maybe it was the knowledge of what it could do to her - for her. Maybe it was the threat of getting caught. Maybe she liked the adrenaline that ran through her veins every time she entered her room and saw it.
Edana lifted it closer, watching as it too caught the moonlight that streamed through her window. The liquid inside flared like flame with every touch of the moon.
Dragonâs Blood.
Thatâs what the coal boy had claimed when he pressed it into her palm that night. Dragonâs Blood that gave its user ⌠abilities.
âHurry.â Edana muttered to herself. âBefore it closes.â
She popped open the lid and, without stopping to think, poured a few drops on the scarlet line on her arm.
Edana screamed.
It burned. It burned white hot as it touched her blood and shot up her arm, through her body.
Fire. She was on fire.
She felt herself fall, felt it as she hit the stone ground, felt the kiss of cool rock against her cheek. Goose flesh rippled across her hot skin and Edana shrieked again at the sensation.
Edana didnât know how long the fire burned through her blood, how long she laid there on the ground of her bedroom. But when she cooled, when her muscles finally loosened, it was still night.
âSit up, Edana. You need to sit up.â Groaning, she pushed herself up by one hand and nearly dropped herself back to the ground at what she saw.
Glowing lines danced up her arms. Fire, under her skin. She lifted her fingers, where the glowing seemed to collect. Edana turned her hand this way and that, watched the flame under skin turn her fingers red.
Dragonâs Blood.
The boy had said it would strengthen her. It would sharpen her senses and her concentration. It would give her the edge she needed over the others.
And even as she thought about its effects, she could feel a calm settle over her mind.
She felt the rough stone under fingertips as if it was a canyon and the cotton pants like the straw mat she slept on as a child. Shadows no longer existed, the corners of her room lit up like noonday, and when she turned to glance at the moon, her eyes shut and she let out a hiss of pain. It was brighter than the sun back home.
Edana lifted her hands again, squinting through the brightness. The fire under her skin was still growing, collecting, until her entire hands looked like they were on fire.
And then they were.
With a yelp, Edanaâs hands erupted. Flames, so white they were almost blue, engulfed her hands. They snaked up her arms, burning the cloth that it touched.
She was going to be swallowed.
âStop!â She yelled, panicked. âStop!â
As if they heard her, the flames slowed - stopping at her elbows. They stayed there, flaring slightly.
She needed to control it. If Edana was going to get ahead of her peers, if she was going to be better than them, she needed to learn.
The flames licked at her arms. They whispered her promises, promises of success and of victory.
