Just got back from seeing Tallymoore! They are a great new Irish band from Wisconsin and I'm really hoping to be able to see them again in the future!
Excitedly Tired
We do many things in life that make us tired. However, doing things that we truly love and are passionate about make us tired in the most glorious of ways. Taking serious steps towards accomplishing one's true destiny is tiring but is healing and energizing to our minds and bodies.
Thursday night, I played a gig at my alma mater, Columbia College Chicago, on solo unaccompanied saxophone for an event of theirs. Seeing the looks on the faces that strolled through the door and realized that there was someone playing music was enough to make me smile. Which made me play slightly out of tune because you can't smile while playing saxophone.
I woke early Friday morning to head to Kenosha, Wisconsin to visit with my mother for the day and play a jazz gig there that night. Whilst with my mother, we toured replica ships of the Nina and the Pinta (you know... the ships that Columbus used).
The gig was a welcomed reuniting with three old musician friends of mine (if you're reading this, Frank, I mean "old" in that we've known each other a few years, not that you're old). It's gentlemen like these that made me want to get into music in the first place. As I joked with a friend of mine, "If all jazz musicians were like these guys, I'd actually pursue a career in jazz saxophone."
Another early wake up on Saturday morning to head back to Chicago for a recording session for the Irish group Tallymoore. After spitting into a metal tube for three hours (AKA playing flute), I joined some friends of mine that night for their housewarming party.
Yet another early waking hour this morning (Sunday) saw me off to the Chicago suburb of West Dundee. This time, Tallymoore was doing a radio interview with Shay Clarke of the radio show Blarney on the Air for WDCB. You can hear our interview on www.wdcb.org Monday night at 7pm. Then, it was off to the engineer of yesterday's session to do a bit of mind-bending producing work.
And finally home.
It's been a long time since I've been this tired, but I continue to feel inspired. It's amazing how something so utterly exhausting can fill me with the greatest of desires to push even harder.
