Damn you Scott for being such a positive impact on the representation of queer identity in mcyt /pos
hi! i got your ask, and i was going to shoot you a private message with a response, but your messages are locked to only people you follow (completely understandable). i'm responding on anon bc i'd rather not make a public post. while i'd like to think people can have a mature convo, i've been on the internet a long time and know that's not always how shit goes down.
re: my thoughts on why people hate scott winning smps
let me preface this by saying that while i have been watching scott for several years at this point, i've really only watched his little competition vids with his friends (hide and seek, little oneshot challenge vids, etc.), his life series vids, and vsmp. i don't typically watch many longform smps bc i simply don't have the time.
i love scott, and i think he's charismatic as hell and he's incredibly skilled at what he does. that said, he is a competitive motherfucker. that's not inherently a bad thing, but there are times where scott's desire to win sometimes makes things less enjoyable to watch.
i think the recent big example most people are referring to with this comment is vsmp. we do know that out of the game he made it clear he did not want to die (pyro has talked about this on streams), which resulted in multiple other creators feeling like they needed to change tactics. this went a couple of different ways: you had characters like pyro, who fully changed his arc to move away from the cure and instead be tragically taken out by shelby (which i think he executed very well). but then you had other characters like apo, who just... feel like they get stuck at the end, or drift who does a complete 180 with her characterization. this was frustrating for a lot of people (myself included) to watch, especially when, as of the end of episode 7, scott had shown little to no signs of wanting to improve (i would even argue scott felt like he was going to double down on his cruelty by the end of his episode, as someone who was keeping up with his pov). while i know there are many who loved his story, and i completely respect that and i'm happy for those people, there are a lot of others who felt cheated.
this happens in other series as well. again, i can't speak to his other smps because i haven't watched them, but i can talk about the life series. scott plays the life series very safe, which does lead to some interesting character interactions and fun moments throughout the series (especially since max charisma motherfucker). that said, there are times where that safety does get a bit, well, boring. in fact, the last two life series seasons, i stopped watching scott's perspective entirely, bc i found the other characters who were willing to take risks, even if it meant they could die and lose, far more interesting. (as an aside, part of me thinks this was just exacerbated by the fact that the last two life series seasons were much more environment vs. player rather than the classic pvp)
another factor that i'm only very distantly aware of is how much space scott's characters tend to take up in fandom spaces. this is a trend i've seen in every fan community as long as i've been in online fan spaces (a very long ass time) - there are characters who are just going to be more popular, and sometimes that popularity gets annoying when people want to discuss other people and parts of a story. this is amplified by shipping culture (which is... a whole fucking topic on its own, and one that has also existed for a very long fucking time), which scott's characters often find themselves the center of. again, i am only distantly aware of this bc i go out of my way to cultivate the fan spaces i want to be in, but for younger fans or people who are just less experienced at navigating this (or people who just love making themselves angry), it can be annoying as hell.
there are probably other reasons that exist. i'm not an expert on scott's smp content at all, but given what i have seen, i can understand some of the frustration. to my knowledge, people did really enjoy his bannerfall character, so it's possible this varies from smp to smp. i do genuinely think scott is a phenomenal cc and i think he does have incredible storytelling moments with other players. there are just times where i know i feel his competitive side interferes with how satisfying or enjoyable a particular story can feel. i know so many people who love everything he does and don't have these issues with his videos, and i think that's awesome. every fan of mcyt content is different because it's such a massive community with so many different stories, and i think it's a good thing that everyone can find pieces of it they enjoy.
I didn't even notice my messages were turned off!! T~T that was mb, I don't mind people dming me. It's totally okay.
I get the issue now, it makes alot of sense now. On a slight tangent, but I didn't actually start watching scott until last year and only watched vsmp this January or December I think? (That also being Scott's pov cause I never got enough time to watch the others'; but I'm still planning to though.) I've only ever watched Gem and Lizzie in my years of mcyt liveblogging so I thought I'd change up my pov to someone more in the center of it all, and boy did I get a bullseye on that lol
Anyways, max charisma is so true watching his pov in vsmp proved how good he was at that oml. And truly, I only watched Scott's pov for the theatrics of it all, wanting to watch it all go down yk? But still, i absolutely understand the human perspective of Goldsmith and probably the other smps i haven't yet watched (ignore the fact that I only watched last life cause i knew scott was the winner... Tbf I tend to bias the pov I watch most of the time. I watched Gem's, I'd be cheering for her, and I did, on Nice Life)
Lastly, think you for clearing that up! I've been confused on why Scott winning box smp would be terrible
