I just watched the CRAZIEST documentary about this 46-year-old guy who had a brief stint in the marines before succumbing to alcoholism and eventually getting a boring job in middle-of-nowhere America and becomes IMPOTENT after a few years of being married and then one day he meets this teenage girl in a chat room and then HE decides to tell her he's actually eighteen AND currently serving as a marine SNIPER and for a few months they swap dirty, passionate messages until the girl (who's username is talhotblond) starts talking to a high school kid who WORKS with Mr Marine and somehow it comes out that Mr Marine is a middle-aged loser who dropped out of the military, and long story short talhotblond is DISGUSTED but keeps getting him to give her attention anyway??? meanwhile she's keeping the other teenage boy (his username is BEEFCAKE) strung along for EXTRA attention, until Mr Maine gets so jealous of their SUPP O SED relationship that he finally goes out and SHOOTS the teenage boy in his car one night (!!!) and finally the cops get involved and are looking for miss talhotblond because they're afraid Mr Marine will go after her too, and when they go to her house and ask her mom how to find her, the MOM C O N F E S S E S that SHE has been catfishing MR MARINE from the BEGINNING by using her OWN TEENAGE DAUGHTERS identity and PHOTOGRAPHS (lots of them taken without her knowledge, even one up-skirt) to bait multiple random men online all without her UNDERAGE daughter even knowing about it. So Marine is in jail, teen daughter is piecing back her life together, Beefcake boy is DEAD, and the middle-aged, sad, dumpy mom is planning to WRITE A B O O K on the "DANGERS OF THE INTERNET".

can we talk about the fact that talhotblond documents what i think is one of the most interesting and pertinent catfish stories (it's rare that such a story could have the descriptor timeless given the rapid changes in technology but this one seems to) and examine the artistic choice the directors made to have the thing voiced by a supposedly dead person??? is that not distasteful and abhorrent?? there are so many avenues for cinematography and other presentational factors when you're able to rely on narrative alone not to mention it cheapens the preferred reading by fictionalising someone's very valid struggles?? idk it's pissed me off for months now
