You couldn't believe it. You didn't want to believe it. What if all of this was just a nightmare? A very scary nightmare that you would eventually wake up from— no.
It was real.
Your best friend, Rowan Khanna, died.
She died.
She sacrificed herself in order to keep you safe. Because she knew you wouldn't want to involve her further in order to make sure she's safe and sound. And because of you, she found herself in the Forbidden Forest to keep an eye on you, just in case— no one could prepare you for what was coming.
You couldn't do anything to stop her the moment you saw her figure jump in front of Ben to save him. Not you, not Ben or Merula could have stopped this.
That's when you realised it wasn't you who cast Protego to avoid getting hit by Rakepick. It was her. And at the thought of it an unused tear that you didn't realise were holding back rolled down your cheek.
You went to your dorm after Dumbledore announced your best friend's death in front of the whole school, not wanting to make eye-contact with anyone. Everyone knew you were the best friends. And getting ‘I am so sorry for your loss’ from so many people at the same time didn't help at all.
You reached your dormitory and closed the door gently, walking towards your bed. You sat at the edge for 15 minutes just looking at the floor doing nothing.
Your life had no meaning anymore. She wasn't just a friend to you. She was your person. Your No.1 support since literally day 1. She was that friend that you didn't have to say anything, or even speak for days and still feel the safest when being around them. Rowan was that person. And you lost her. Forever.
You kept thinking about all the things you have done and been together. From silly laughs to caring about each other until your mind kept replaying the moment you saw her lifeless body hit the ground.
Your thoughts were interrupted by a knock on your dorm window. You knew exactly who was knocking.
You got up from your bed and walked towards the window to open it, seeing your favourite brown eagle waiting for you.
It was Talbott.
After you got him inside he transformed into his human form and saw you on the verge of tears. He didn't have to say anything, neither did you.
He wrapped your arms around you and held you close to his chest, so you could hear his heartbeat. He knew about that feeling all too well.
You couldn't hold your tears anymore. You grasped into his shirt and let out a broken sob into his chest, letting all that grief consume you. You couldn't stop crying now that you were in his arms safe and sound.
He gently moved the both of you to your bed, laying you and him in the soft mattress so you could be comfortable. He stroked your back and whispered soft things in your ear. “Let it out, dove. I'm here for you.” He cooed softly at your ear.
A muffled sob came as a response to his gentle words as you let your grief about your best friend's death overpower you completely.
After a long while of breaking down completely into his arms, until the only things that could be heard from you were soft sniffles, you looked up at him from his chest with red-rimmed eyes and a broken heart.
“I lost her. I lost my best friend...” You murmured, defeated and heartbroken. “It's all my fault.” A stray tear escaped your ear as you said these words that completely broke Talbott's heart apart.
“No, love. Don't ever say that.” He whispered as he held the back of your head. “It wasn't your fault for what happened. It was Rakepick who killed her, not you.”
“Yes, but I'm the reason she was in the Forbidden Forest..!” You admitted. Talbott gave you a confused look at your words. “What do you mean?”
You let out a sigh. “Penny told me after Dumbledore's speech that when Bill wanted to talk to me, Charlie, Ben and Merula about the vault last year, Rowan wanted to protect me. She knew that I wouldn't let her help me even more than she has all these years because I wanted to keep her safe.” You confessed. “And Penny told her everything and since then, Rowan had been followed me from a distance ever since.” Talbott raised his hand that was on the back of your head to wipe your tears from your damp cheeks.
“I was the reason she was in the Forbidden Forest last night. She even used Protego on me to not get hit by Rakepick. And ultimately going in front of Ben to save him from the Killing Curse...” You continued. “Not only am I a horrible friend, Talbott, I couldn't even save my own best friend!” You cried out. Your heart was aching so much you thought you were hallucinating.
Talbott kept stroking your back comfortingly while listening to his girlfriend talk about last night's unfortunate events. “You're not a horrible friend, love. In fact you are one of the most extraordinary, kind, and caring people to ever exist. And Rowan most certainly knew that. It wasn't your fault for wanting to protect her. And it wasn't your fault for how things turned out.” He comforted you.
“I may not know her like you did, but trust me; She loved you. And she still does. Just because she is not physically here doesn't mean she left you. She is still here.” Talbott took one of your hands and placed it to your chest, right over your heart. “In your heart.”
You looked at him deep in his amber eyes and felt your vision going blurry again. His words really struck a cord inside you. You opened your mouth to speak but no words came.
Talbott leaned in to kiss your forehead before resting his forehead on your own forehead, his eyes full of love and worry. “You are very strong. More than you'll ever know. But you certainly don't have to carry all that weight all alone. Especially now. I'm here for you to help you. And I'll never, ever, leave your side no matter what.” He whispered softly before leaving a small peck on the top of your nose before pulling back to see the very eyes he falls in love with every single day.
Meanwhile you still felt like a cat had gotten your tongue. You closed your eyes for a moment, but every time you did so, memories of Rowan were flooding your mind. You opened your eyes again to see Talbott looking at you with a loving yet worrying gaze.
“I don't want to lose you too, Tal.” You murmured. “After everything that's happening right now, I don't want to lose anyone ever again. I already lost my brother for a long time and now Rowan. I won't handle it if I lose you too, or anyone else again.” You sighed. “And to be honest I don't know if I'll ever recover from Rowan's death...”
“You will. Certainly not now or even in three years. But you will, in your own way. After a long time, instead of thinking about her and getting sad all over again, you will think of her and smile because she would be so proud of her best friend.” Talbott cooed gently. His words were making you carry all that burden with ease. Because this time, you were not alone.
“And, no,” He continued, catching you off guard for a second. “You won't lose me. You stuck with me and there's nothing that you can do about it. No more ‘flying solo’ now that I've got you and you've got me.” He cupped your face and leaned in to kiss your tears away.
A small smile managed to appear on your lips as he kissed your tears away, holding your face with such love and reverence. Your arms went to wrap around his neck, bringing him closer to you.
He could feel your smile, even if it was small— it was an improvement. And his heart melted instantly. “There's that smile of yours that melts my heart.” He oh-so-casually said in that smooth voice of his.
You rolled your eyes at him before he pulled back to see you once again. “How are you feeling right now?” He asked you almost carefully, knowing your thoughts and feelings were still a mess.
“Better.” You sighed softly. “Now with you I feel better. Thank you, love.” You rubbed your eyes and Talbott found it the perfect opportunity to wrap his arms around you and keep you closer to his chest.
“There's no need to thank me, dove.” He whispered softly in your ear. “You're not alone anymore— remember that. You have me. You have our friends.”
After a while you talked about Rowan and spoke about your friendship with her all these years. Her dreams of wanting to be the youngest professor in Hogwarts, her kindest and intelligence, her weirdness that always matched with your own since literally day 1. How she was there for you, in your Quidditch matches, in your ups and downs and always rooted to be your bridesmaid on your wedding with Talbott (which when he heard it his heart ached with love and grief), and how she was always down for anything that involved any adventure.
Eventually you fell asleep in his arms, your tiredness and exhaustion along with your grief took a heavy toll on you and with Talbott urging you to get some decent sleep, you did. Your head was resting on the top of his chest, right above his heart.
Lucky for your sake, you were fast asleep. His eyes never left your face, and now that you were asleep he kept thinking about you. How can someone be as strong as you think about all these terrible things and let alone face them all this time alone so you wouldn't worry anyone.
His fingers caressed your face in a feather-light touch, not wanting to wake you up from your sleep. You looked so peaceful like you never had any worries in your life.
He made a promise to himself. You weren't going to be alone anymore. He was with you and was going to love you and be with you until the end of time. You were strong for so long. But he was here to help you through it.
BONUS:
Little did you and Talbott know, Rowan was witnessing the whole thing between you and him in your dorm as a ghost so you couldn't see her. It was true. She wasn't there physically, but she would always be there for you and protect you, even as a ghost.
Just because she died doesn't mean she couldn't spend time with you or even make new memories as a ghost. You were her best friend after all. And still will be. If she isn't going to annoy you even after her death who will?
Because you were not alone anymore. You never were with her. You had been strong for so long. With Rowan, Talbott and all of your friends by your side you were stronger than ever before.
