Marc Bolan: Take Three 1. Bolan's appearance on the BBC's music show Top of the Pops in March 1971, wearing glitter and satin, is often cited as the beginning of the glam rock movement. 2. In 1964, Bolan played acoustic guitar like his musical inspiration, Bob Dylan. By July 1970, inspired in part by Mungo Jerry's song "In the Summertime," he moved to an electric sound with "Ride a White Swan." 3. Bolan never learned to drive, fearing a premature death. On September 16, 1977, while riding in car driven by Gloria Jones, he died in a crash. He was two weeks short of his 30th birthday.
