I'm so happy California is now the second State of USA to legally recognize Nonbinary and Intersex people. Congratulations to my Trans, Nonbinary and Intersex friends! 🌈⚧💖 Oregon was actually the first state, followed by the District of Columbia. Both already have their own laws to accommodate the third marker "X" in licenses and other forms earlier this year. New York just introduced a similar legislation, too. And this is just USA. For those of you who don't know, I'd like to remind you all something. Let's not forget about another historical fact. Countless Indigenous nations of this continent and the Pacific Islands have a rich, ancient history of Gender and Sexual Diversity. They knew the existence of the third and fourth genders. They respected their people long before the Europeans invaded and colonize their homelands and nearly destroyed these unique, vibrant cultures. They have their own social structure, traditions, and language. In more recent decades, there has been a growing support in their communities to reclaim their heritage and identity. At least a hundred tribes in the past and present have the third and fourth gender in their societies, including the Muxe from the Zapotec culture in Oaxaca Mexico, the Boté from the Apsáalooke (Crow) nation, the Patlacheh and Cuiloni from the Mexica (Aztec) Empire, and the Lhamana and Katotse from the A:shiwi (Zuni) tribe. Today many Indigenous American communities have come to remember and honor their tribes people today as Two-Spirit people. In Hawai'i, their people are known traditionally as Māhū; the Māori people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) have Takatāpui; and in Sāmoa, they are Fa'afafine and Fa'afatama.
