I return my looking over the water. A bumblebee was lazily buzzing next to a lavender plant, and I think of Dahl.
“Did you know that lavender is edible?” I offer.
“Sounds pretty gross.” Gabriel laughs.
“Super good for you though.” I say. “Good for the immune system, and calming the nerves... i’m sure it’s not delicious but it will keep you alive.”
“Really? Lavender?” Gabriel asks. “What else is edible? In the forests I mean.”
“Heaps of things! My Dad knows all of them. Herbs, leaves, even some mosses that grow on tree trunks, some bugs...” I start listing them off. I notice Taissa is looking at me, but I can’t discern her expression. “You could make a whole meal! There’s enough of the land to keep you going for ages... I’d miss chocolate though...”
“So theoretically, someone could get lost in these woods and survive?” Gabriel asks, a little feverishly. I’m amused that he’s so interested in the subject, but Taissa seems a little uncomfortable.
“Theoretically, sure.” I say.
“Gabriel...” Taissa says, very gently.
“What?” he snaps. “The detective said that it was most likely that he would have starved to death. But maybe he didn’t. Maybe he’s okay.”
It clicks into place now. Gabriel’s missing cousin.
“He’d have to know what to look for, Gabe.” Taissa almost whispers.
“He’s smart.”
“I know, but-”
“Do you want him to be dead?” he says, quite factually.
“Of course I don’t, Gabe. I’m just trying to be realistic.” Taissa said calmly, but sternly. They’re being civil, but there is heat under their words. They’ve argued about this before. I can feel tears in my eyes. I didn’t mean to start a fight between Taissa and Gabriel.
“What’s up, Precious?” Gabriel asks, noticing my sadness.
“I didn’t meant to bring it up.” I say. “I was being insensitive. I should have thought about your cousin before I said anything-”
“I’m sorry, i’ll stop.” Gabriel says. “It’s not your fault. You didn’t know. Shall we start walking home?”
As we walk home, I can’t help but try and think about where Johnny might be. I know that Gabriel and Taissa are thinking the same.
