“One-fourth of Americans drink water from systems that don’t meet safety standards...As climate change increases the intensity and duration of hurricane season, Puerto Rico will likely find itself in even more dire circumstances. That means we need to invest significant resources now in the island’s water and power infrastructure, which remains fragile at best. So far, U.S. leaders have approved only a small fraction of what Puerto Rico needs to protect itself. By shortchanging this American island, we are condemning it to more climate-related destruction and an ongoing water crisis. And many other vulnerable communities are in the same fix.” - National Geographic vía https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2019/03/drinking-water-safety-in-united-sates-can-be-fixed #TainoLibrary Artwork by Christi Belcourt (@christi_belcourt). https://www.instagram.com/p/B47ay71JEUw/?igshid=5agbnf7evztu

“It's been more than 60 years since [Dolores ‘Lolita’ Lebrón Sotomayor] led the attack [on the U.S. Congress], uttering one of her most famous phrases after being detained; saying she wasn't there to kill anyone ‘but to die for Puerto Rico.’ She entered the building with a Puerto Rican flag shouting ‘Long live free Puerto Rico!’ Lebrón had a political awakening in 1937 at the age of 18. A group of Puerto Rican activists working for independence from the United States were marching against the imprisonment of a leader in their movement, and police officers opened fire on the peaceful demonstration, killing 19 civilians. This event became known as the Ponce Massacre. During the 1950's, hundreds of supporters of independence were incarcerated. Some would remain in prison for up to two decades. Repressive legislation made it largely illegal to advocate in support of Puerto Rican independence. In the 1950's, those who did were incarcerated merely for speaking in public, as proven by the publicly available transcripts of court trials. Puerto Rico has been occupied by the United States since the U.S. war with Spain in 1898. Since then, the U.S. Congress has exercised sovereignty over the island nation, whose residents have no voice or vote in Congress and cannot vote in presidential elections despite being U.S. citizens. Puerto Rico continues to suffer the effects of colonialism as evidenced by the current debt crisis on the island.” - Source: teleSUR English via https://www.telesurenglish.net/news/Lolita-Lebron-Puerto-Rico-Remembers-Independence-Fighter--20170801-0023.html Artwork by Yasmin Hernandez #TainoLibrary https://www.instagram.com/p/B5EA67kpC9M/?igshid=i3ruv1u0mzcg

“In late November of 2018, women in Puerto Rico took to the streets to demand an end to violence against women. Protesters marched to the Governor’s mansion, demanding an end to gender-based violence and femicide — the systematic killing of women based solely on their gender. For years, Latin America has been the epicenter for femicide, giving rise to movements such as “Ni Una Menos" — “Not One Less.” According to the ACLU, Puerto Rico has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world. And this level of violence has only been increasing.” - WYNC Studios vía https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/takeaway/segments/puerto-rican-women-fighting-back-against-systemic-violence-island-femicide #TainoLibrary #NiUnaMenos Artwork by Kimberly Barzola (kimberlybarzola.bigcartel.com) https://www.instagram.com/p/B48Sd5fpMnT/?igshid=um678lqydf6
