Things You Should Know About Your Exhaust-System
Taking proper care of your car exhaust system & keeping it in a good working condition is vital for fuel mileage, the environment and your safety. But what if you are not taking proper care of your car? If you ignore the major signs it can be hazardous and can prove fatal to your car. To avoid this, many things should be kept in mind regarding the exhaust system like its installation, inspection and repair. Installation of a high-performance exhaust system is compulsory and easiest thing to do. The primary job of a high-performance exhaust system is to ensure that the gases created due to internal combustion are expelled outside of your car by using an elaborate tubing system, safely with less harmful gas emissions and sounds. The 3 main functions of an Exhaust system are as follows: 1. Directs the exhaust fumes that are created during internal combustion of the engine to the back of the vehicle. 2. Reduces amount of toxic chemicals present in the fumes to reduce emissions. 3. Keeps the noise at a minimum level from the series of explosions created during the fuel combustion process.
EXHAUST SYSTEM-ITS COMPONENTS AND TIME OF REPLACEMENT: Although there are different types of Exhaust system but a typical one has the following components and functions:
EXHAUST MANIFOLD: This part of the exhaust system is commonly made of steel, iron or aluminum attached to the cylinder head, its function is to collect all the exhaust gases from the engine cylinders and direct it towards the exhaust tail pipes. Cars with all the cylinders have one exhaust manifold. It consists of a series of pipes that serves as a road for the gases to exit the cylinders and enter the exhaust system. In case if the exhaust gases are escaping from the places it didn’t before then the exhaust manifold may need to be replaced.
OXYGEN SENSOR: It acts as an indicator to show how much oxygen is present inside the car, it is normally implemented inside the modern fuel injected cars and is mounted in the exhaust manifold or normally located on the either side of the catalytic converter, it uses this information to increment or decrements the fuel to get the correct mixture for maximum fuel economy. The Oxygen sensor can become slight inactive and will not give the accurate results over time ,in that situation it needs to be replaced and doing so can save your money in the long run.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER: This part of exhaust system is responsible for lowering the toxicity of emissions released by the engine; it is positioned between the muffler and the exhaust manifold. It is named so because it uses a catalyst to convert the hydrocarbons (into carbon-dioxide and water), carbon-monoxide into (carbon-dioxide) & nitrogen oxides on specific converters. Catalytic converters can be blocked that time it can produce a rotten egg smell or heat from floor indicating the time of its replacement.
MUFFLERS (OR SILENCERS): Mufflers act as a sound absorb er by quieting down the exhaust system up to reasonable level. Located towards the end of the exhaust system, its function is to reduce the noise produced during fuel combustion and take out all the fumes out of the exhaust system. Different mufflers use different methodologies like some of the mufflers may use perforated tubes for cancelling sound waves, some use baffles for dissipating the sound energy and quieting the noise, some use fiberglass packing for sound absorption. It may happen that the muffler may rust, or get damaged making the vehicle sound considerably louder, it’s an indication that the muffler needs to be replaced immediately.
EXHAUST PIPES: Exhaust pipes are normally made of stainless steel or aluminum & is the part of exhaust system to which all the components described above are linked to it carries all the gases generated during the process and directs them through various parts before expelling out of the tail pipe, from here exhaust gases are funneled out in the air. Exhaust pipes can be eroded with rust causing holes inside, at that time exhaust pipe is asking for the replacement. Hope you are now aware about the exhaust system of your car. Frequent check-ups and protecting it from rust can keep it in a good and healthy state for a longer period of time else the exhaust will fail to work.
