HM-2 Idea
Using the two versions from Tagboard by IvIark.
Just a quick note to self, it’s a start to a possible modified build.
Edit: There's a build doc for a "Graviton" by aion DIY Guitar Effects that has a more modern parts list, I used it to know what transistors I could substitute. It mentions that a two germanium diodes (D5+6 in the build; probably a 4148 or 914) could be swapped for Schottky diodes for a more "modern" sound.
Note to Self #1
wonder if I’ll be able to maintain numbering these correctly :P
I’m thinking of making another Tube Screamer merged build (Ibanez TS808 and TS9) [credit to “IvIark“ on Tagboard, pretty sure I’ve done a bunch of their builds]
I’ve heard the main difference between the two TS’s are two resistors [essentially], Electrosmash had a good analysis on it, I think the TS9 was the one with higher resistance towards the output (10k > 100k; 100R > 470R).
I was trying to draft out a way to wire a single two-way switch to swap the two resistors in separate areas at the same time using possibly a 2PDT On-On Toggle, but I’ve only really used that to alternate the path for one component (diode selection for clipping). Debating on just wiring two switches that need to be flipped to the same orientation (like Up/Up to be the TS808 and Down/Down to be the TS9). The main issue with that is that I’d have a total of 3 switches mounted on the pedal if I do the diode clipping toggle switch. Also.... that’d clutter up the simple 3-knob layout for a Tube Screamer.
I’m using stripboard, not a PCB, so I think this is more of an “offboard” or layout editing issue.
I might make the main board, omit the two resistors and socket them, then breadboard some options or something.
Regardless, I have other builds I was going to do, so this is a back-burner idea.
Edit: When I made this post I realized that “IvIark” ‘s name is a stylized form of “Mark”.... maybe this occurred to be before, but I saw it even more when I typed it out.
Failed Buffered Out Attempt
I tried doing a two in one enclosure (1590BB) with a Multi Cab Sim and JHS Little Black Buffer, with the Buffer being wired from the Output of the Cab Sim and then to the pedal’s Main Output using a 3PDT 2-way toggle switch.
I wired the Buffer same as the Madbean 3PDT wiring diagram for the switch, but I kept getting a loud “pop” whenever I engaged the pedal and excess noise. I’m pretty sure I grounded everything correctly, but that may have been the issue at some point leading to excess noise.
I tried removing the LED from the Buffer’s circuit in case the LED engaging was the cause of the pop, that didn’t work. I tried both circuits independently and they both functioned correctly, however the buffer normally “popped” whenever first engaged.
Some suggested putting a “pulldown resistor” between the output and ground or adding a resistor to the output lead. The value suggested ranged from 1M to 2.2M, then one suggested 10M for some reason.
I can’t find the post/link where someone said putting random pulldown resistors isn’t a solution.
The solution I ended up going with was removing the Buffer from the enclosure and boxing it as a single pedal for the Multi Cab Sim. The circuit’s EQ is pretty nice, I’ll probably use it in conjunction with my Joyo American Sound when recording direct into my interface/DAW.
