Grimmjowβs head is between his knees, hunched all the way in half in his seat. The concrete pipping is cool under his thighs, but the rest of him is hot. Sticky. Sense-memory of warm hollow blood replacing the reality of humid Karakura air.
Japan is edging into July, and the days are warming with the oncoming rush of summer. The vivid green leaves on the trees lining the streets and scattered through the parks have long since returned, flowers unfurled and lingering, dusting the town in whites and pinks. Even the river which bisects the town feels more alive somehow. Brighter.
Grimmjow feels like heβs doing the opposite. Shrinking away from his friends and his responsibilities. His energy evaporating under consecutive late nights patrolling the city rooftops, and the few hours of sleep he does manage to catch whether its at his bed or his desk are plagued by the sight and fear of scuttling, hungry monsters.
He doesnβt know what to tell Chad, caught between the knowledge that thereβs no way to explain to his friend that heβs fighting for his life with nothing but a sword and his nerves, falling behind on his school work to kill creatures no one else can see. He isnβt losing his mind, not yet. His place is very much still under construction after the first night he learned what a hollow was, no matter how much he wished it really was just a truck careening through his living room.
He refuses to drag Chad into this, as much as he wishes his words were true. But he is alone. They donβt know what heβs going through.
βI dropped out of the soccer team.β He says instead, head turning just slightly to find Chads form next to him. Itβs true, but its just a symptom of the problem. ββM not doinβ so good at school anymore, guess I gotta study harder.β
