Thank you for such a sweet compliment!!! As for tablets go, I’ve had three in the past 15 years (yikes hah) and I’ve really loved them all!
My first tablet I saved up for when I was 12. It was a 4X6″ one from Wacom that I can’t even find info on anymore! I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a Bamboo because I disctinctly remember when Bamboos came out and wishing I had one haha. This one worked really well, but the actual drawing space was probably more like 3x5″. It was small but for a starter tablet it totally worked! I think probably nowadays the bamboos are the most comparable to this, plus they’re pretty affordable so that’s nice!
My second tablet was an Intuos Pro that I bought after saving up a few months in college. Man, I loved that thing….I cried the day it broke, (like embarassing, ugly crying you only save for special occassions), but that thing was my best buddy. It’s nice and big so it has plenty of room to draw, and because of the size it’s healthier for your wrist if you’re like me an have wrist problems. It gives you lots of room to use nice full motions with your whole arm to draw instead of cramped little t-rex arm drawing. (I’m not making fun, I do this when I draw traditionally and it hurts after a while!)
My current tablet was a big change for me because not only did I switch brands, but I switched types! I currenty work on a Huion GT-191 which is a display tablet. First of all, I was a little afraid to switch to Huion because I was so brand-loyal to Wacom and display tablets are so expensive, it seemed insane to switch to something I couldn’t test out, but I watched a bunch of youtube videos from artists I trusted and decided to go for it.
Now, that being said, I know not everyone wants to chuck a bunch of money into a tablet and this thing was pretty dang pricey, but honestly I love this one and it’s been worth every penny. My computer is an ancient HP that hasn’t let me calibrate color properly no matter what I’ve tried, so I used to have to draw something, save it, email it to myself and then check the colors on my phone constantly while I was working on things. It was RIDICULOUS. So I’ve been super happy with my pretty proper colors on this tablet. It rocked my world! I’ve been super impressed with Huion so far and definitely think that I’ll probably stick with them from now on since they’re more affordable. I would definitely recommend you check them out!
Most importantly, I’d say when buying a new tablet make sure you watch reviews, lots of them. You’re investing in your future, whether you want to make art for a living or for a hobby, so you want to make sure you get the most bang for your buck! I would suggest maybe watching 3-4 for each tablet model you’re intrested and making a pros/cons list as you’re watching them and then decide for yourself!
Like I said though, I loved both of my Wacom tablets and they lasted a thousand years each and were great. Wacom has a pretty great reputation and I know a lot of artists are brand-loyal with them! They customer service was always great with me too and you can buy them in person in a lot of computer stores now a days so if you want it right that second it’s awesome! Huion is definitely more affordable, especially if you’re looking to get something bigger or a display tablet. I can’t 100% vouch for them because, like I said, I’ve only had Failsafe (yep.) since September, but I really love her so far!
