how can you tell when a tabby has low white spotting vs just being a tabby? my brown girl has a solid white chin that goes down her neck, and I'm pretty sure that's just her tabby coloring, but I'm not sure

I'd say if the white on her neck is continuus with the white on her chin and gradually fades into color instead of having a sharp border, then it's probably just the tabby pattern.

The cat on the right has a locket, a type of very minimal white spotting.

Probably this one too. The white is very stark, and seems to be separated from the chin.

This one, i'd say just the tabby.

is there a genetic reason for why there's so many tabby variants??

I'm not sure if this explanation would be considered genetic, but I think it's because the standard tabby pattern is a very complicated matter.

Many-many details.

There are lots enzymes and receptors and transporters and whatnot proteins that work on putting every stripe and every shade to its place; if any of them mutates in a way that halts or changes this process, the final result will change too.

Weaving has been my passion since I was about 10 and created potholders on a metal frame loom. The repetition of the over-under tabby pattern relaxes my spirit. Though my latest tapestry is still incomplete and does not look exactly as I had hoped, I have to admit that I truly enjoyed the process. One weaving leads to another...and another...and another.
