Second Short story for my English class. Totally different than what I was posting
It was her friends Richard, who smiled down at her. “We’re here!” he said excitedly and then jumped out of the van and skipped around back and opened up the trunk. Leanne groaned and stretched a bit, rubbing her eyes again. She hadn’t planned on falling asleep, if she had she would’ve worn her glasses instead of her contacts.
She opened her door and stepped out, wincing as pain shot through her legs and they tingled. She stood up straight and the reached her hands up to the sky, groaning. Her muscles were protesting the six hour drive they had just finished, but Lee realized it was worth it as she looked around. The cabin was more of a mansion, but it sat on about 50 acres of land with a private lake. Lee could see chairs on the shore and a hammock in the trees. She let out a happy sigh, knowing this was going to be a great vacation. It’d actually be great no matter what happened. They all had just graduated from college and were ready for the adventure afterward, but before that they needed some time to relax and this cabin would be perfect.
Charlotte came over to Leanne and smiled, “Isn’t it beautiful?! It’s better than the pictures! I’m so glad we bought this place!” she giggled and headed to the front door, spinning a few times before skipping up the steps and unlocked the door.
Lee shook her head and went to help the others get their things into the house. They had bought the house and the property. Charlotte paid for most of it since she came form a rich family that spoiled her. It’d been a crazy idea that George had had a month ago. Surprisingly they were all sober when he came up with it. Lee thought it was ridiculous, but Charlotte and Mackenzie thought it was a faboulous idea. Kenzie said it’d be a great place for them to meet up in twenty years when they all had fmailies and such. Lee didn’t think she’d ever have a family, but she liked the idea of having a palce to come back to. It also meant they all had a place to come back to if their lives fell apart. Lee had a secret bet with Kenzie that Richard would end up homeless and living here. They had paid the full price in cash after everyone pitched in what they could. Lee had put in all the leftover money she’d saved for college. Charlotte picked up whatever slack there was in buying the house.
They all went inside, though the boys went back a second time to get the rest of Charolette’s things. She had about four other bags filled with what everyone assumed to be clothes, but it was actually all decorations for the house. The house came half furnished. All the furniture was old and is was just furiniture in the house. There weren’t any decorations on the walls and nothing in the cabinets of the kitchen. There weren’t even sheets on the beds, which annoyed everyone except Lee and Charlotte. They’d known about the furnishings of the house.
Lee picked out the room she was staying in, which had three big windows and over looked the lake. Her room had a bed, a dresser, and a dingy desk in the corner. The closet was a hole in the wall with no doors, though she didn’t mind. She didn’t bring anything that needed to go in the closet. Lee started unpacking, putting her clothes in the dresser. She did have to wipe out all the dust that had settled in the drawers and even killed a spider.
She went to the desk and pressed on the top and sighed as she heard the legs creak. It wasn’t sturdy enough to hold anything more than a vase. She hoped one of the boys would be able to fix it as she’d like to use it while they were there. They were going to be spending a month there, maybe more. The boys wanted to stay for the summer, but Lee and Kenzie needed to find jobs and apartments some place in the city. Charlotte already had a job with a local law firm as a partner and would be getting a penthouse apartment. The boys had no idea what they were going to do for jobs even though both had majored in engineering and could get a job anywhere. Kenzi had major in fashion design and wanted to work for Vouge, but that probably wouldn’t happen for a long time. Lee never really figured out what she’d wanted to do and simply got a degree in history and forgien languages. She’d enjoyed her classes, but now had no idea what she was going to do.
Lee jumped at the sudden outburst from Charolette. She walked to the door of her room, “What?” she called out.
“Come help organize the kitchen! Also the boys want pizza!”
Lee sighed and headed downstairs, rolling her hair into a sloppy bun. “I thought we were gonna go grocery shopping after we settled in a bit.” She said as she came into the kitchen, looking at her friends. By the look on Charlotte’s face they’d been debating the issue of food for a while.
“Lee we’re on vacation! No one is going to want to spend any time cooking! We should be out swimming right now!” Richard said with a grin.
Lee raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms over her chest, “Weren’t you the one who wanted to make us his famous chicken pot pie? And George I thought you wanted to grill everyday!”
George shifted a bit, taking half a step away from Richard, “But pizza sounds so good! I don’t want to cook right now.”
Lee rolled her eyes, “Fine. You two go swimming and we’ll go shopping. Also where is Kenzie?”
“She’s debating on what room she wants. I think she’ll end up taking the attic room. She’s always loved creepy places. Now lets make a list of what you guys want.” Charlotte grabbed a small pad of paper from her purse and a pen.
“Nope! They don’t wanna cook so they don’t get a say in what we get from the store. They can live off of whatever frilly things we buy and can’t complain. When they start doing their share of work then they can complain.” Lee said, grabbing Charlotte’s purse and the keys to the van. She headed to the front door and texted Kenzie, telling her they were going to the store and asked her what she needed.
Lee heard Charlotte stammer and then scramble after her. The remaining silence please Lee as it meant the boys were too shocked to do anything. Or they were re-thinking whatever strategy Richard had come up with. George usually was Richards wing man in the many plots he comes up with. Lee sometimes felt bad for George as he was dragged into crazy situations, but George always seemed to enjoy them.
Charlotte caught up to Lee at the front door and snatched her purse from Lee, “So what? Are you giving Richard and Kenzie time alone to confess their love to each other?”
Lee chuckled as she walked out to the van. “That wasn’t really my plan. I just wanted to show the boys who’s going to be in charge while we’re out here. That and we need to plan how this summer is going to go. The house needs a little bit of work, but I want to relax. And at some point I have to find a job.”
Charlotte giggled as she got into the front passenger seat of the van, “Lee stop worrying about a job. We have one month to do nothing but be bums. Lets do that and then worry about jobs and things.”
Lee let out a heavy sigh as she got into the drivers seat, “Fine.”
Charlotte grinned and then waited for her to go and then looked at her with a raised eyebrow. She then screamed as George slammed into her door. George laughed and climbed into the back seat, “Hurry before Richard realives I’m not changing into my trunks!”
They laughed and headed out to the store to buy the food they needed for at least the next two weeks.
Charlotte drove back to the cabin. She and George were talking about some case she’d been reading about in the news. Lee wasn’t really focused on their conversation and was staring out the window, watching the trees go by. She blinked when she saw what appeared to be a lion, but just shook it off. What freaked her out was the gaint man she saw half a mile up the road. He was dressed in black and had to be twelve feet tall. Lee turned in her seat to look out the back window, confused as to how he’d disappeared.
She turned back around, still confused and focused on the glove box infront of her.
“You ok?” George asked, leaning up from the back seat to peer at her.
Lee looked at him, “Yeah….I think so…I thought I was someone back there.”
“Well we aren’t going back! Nothing good ever comes from hitchhickers!” Charlotte said sternly, locking the already locked car doors to reinforce her decision.
“Richard is the only one I know who picks up- Actually yeah you’re right. Nothing good comes from hitchhikers.” George knew if he defended Richard he’d loose terribly. Not only that but any hitchhiker Richard got took all his money.
Lee sighed and just shrugged it off as her eyes playing tricks on her. Anytime she went by some woods she thought she saw something. Sometimes it was animals and sometimes it was just creepy shapes. She’d gotten used to it, but seeing a ten foot man kinda shook her.
They got back to the house and took everything inside. Richard was swimming in the lake and yelled at George when he saw him. Kenzi was sitting in the hammock, a safe distance away from the water. George trotted off to wrestle Richard in the water while Lee and Charlotte went in and put grocerys away.
Afterwards Lee went to explore the house. She found that most of the furniture there was old and could use a new coat of stain or needed to just be scrapped and burned. Most of the tables needed to be replaced and two couches needed new
